Box Score

BERKELEY - Davis Paul scored his second straight game-winning golden goal to give No. 12 California a 2-1 double overtime victory over Oregon State on a cloudy Friday afternoon at Edwards Stadium. The senior forward, set up by sophomore defender Steve Birnbaum, chipped in his team-high seventh goal of the year at the 104:28 mark. After playing in their ninth overtime game and fourth straight overtime game of the season, the Golden Bears improved their record to 10-2-3 (6-1-1 in the Pac-10). Oregon State fell to 6-7-0 (1-5-0 Pac-10).

Today's game was the second in the usual home and home conference series between the Bears and Beavers. In the first game, Cal blew out Oregon State, 5-0, on Oct. 8 in Corvallis, Ore. This time, Oregon State sat back and defended well against the Pac-10's top goalscoring team, which had scored 28 goals before today.

Birnbaum had also scored the game's first goal in the first half, after Paul's corner kick found senior midfielder Servando Carrasco and the latter crossed to Birnbaum. Crashing into the Beavers' six-yard box, Birnbaum headed in the first goal of his Cal career at 33:04.

The Bears took their 1-0 lead into halftime, when they had a 10-3 shots advantage.

Cal outshot Oregon State in the second half as well, 12-6, but the Beavers were more aggressive in the attack. That paid off for OSU at 48:07, when Roberto Farfan's cross from the flank found Travis Sanchez, who headed past Cal junior goalkeeper David Bingham for the equalizer.

The Bears took four shots and had one corner kick as they looked for the winner in the last 10 minutes of regulation. The last two shots were on the mark, but an OSU player blocked sophomore forward John Fitzpatrick's close-range shot at 88:02 and OSU goalie Steve Spangler saved Hector Jimenez's blast at 89:36.

The game went into the first overtime tied at 1-1. After OSU outshot Cal, 5-0, in the first 10-minute overtime period, Cal only needed one shot to claim sudden victory in the second OT.

The Bears play their penultimate regular-season home game of the season on Halloween, Sunday, Oct. 31, at 2 p.m. when they host Washington at Edwards Stadium.
