CORVALLIS, Ore. -
Ted Jones' first goal of his career was the eventual gamewinner in No. 14/19 California's 5-0 rout of Oregon State on Friday night at Paul Lorenz Field. A.J. Soares scored twice, Tony Salciccia scored his first of the year and John Fitzpatrick netted his team-high tying fourth goal of 2010 for the Golden Bears. Cal improved its record to 6-1-2 (2-0-0 in the Pac-10), while the Beavers fell to 6-4-0 (1-2-0 Pac-10).
Jones, a junior midfielder, and Salciccia, a freshman midfielder, each produced three points tonight. At the 15:07 mark, Oregon State goalkeeper Steve Spangler could not handle Salciccia's cross, which found Jones, who made the score 1-0.
At 20:09, senior midfielder Hector Jimenez and sophomore defender Steve Birnbaum combined to set up Soares, who headed past Spangler to make the score 2-0.
Cal did not let up and scored less than a minute later when Jones returned the favor to Salciccia, who nodded in a goal at 20:32. The Bears led, 3-0. Prior to this season, Jones had not scored a point; he collected his first goal and his first assist of his Cal career in one night.
Senior defender Demitrius Omphroy assisted on the last two goals. His pass in the OSU penalty area found Fitzpatrick at 48:44, and the sophomore forward scored to tie senior forward Davis Paul for the team lead in goals. Omphroy later found Soares, who scored off another header at 71:23 to make the final score 5-0.
Cal outshot the Beavers, 14-7. Junior goalie David Bingham made four saves for Cal, while Spangler made four saves for OSU.
The Bears next play against Washington at 2 p.m. on Sunday, Oct. 10, in Seattle. The Huskies improved to 7-3-1 (1-2-0 Pac-10) after beating Stanford, 2-0, in Seattle also on Friday night.
