LOS ANGELES - The No. 21/16 California women's soccer team held No. 14/13 UCLA (7-3-1) to 82 minutes of scoreless play before the Bruins snuck in a goal to take the 1-0 decision on Friday night. The Golden Bears drop to 5-2-4 overall and 0-1-0 in Pac-10 conference following the conference-opening game for both squads while the Bruins now stand at 8-3-1 and 1-0-0 in the Pac-10.
Sydney Leroux scored the lone goal at 82:01 on a give and go with Jenna Richmond. The goal was Leroux's squad-leading seventh of the year.
"Tonight was a very well played game between two great teams," Cal head coach Neil McGuire said. "It took a special goal from a special player to break the deadlock. Our team is in high spirits and looking forward to USC on Sunday."
Katrin Omarsdottir paced the Cal side with four shots. Freshman keeper Emily Kruger made five saves in 90 minutes of play between the posts. UCLA outshot the Bears, 13-9, noting the second time all season the Bears have been outshot. The Bruins hold the all-time series with their big sister Bears at 13-4-0, winning the past six.
UCLA took three shots in the first 10 minutes of play. Freshman goalkeeper Emily Kruger saved two and the Cal defense blocked the other.
The Bruins held the power from 12:46-18:29, firing off three shots and taking tow corner kicks. Kruger was there to stop two while another went wide.
Cal got its first shot of the game at the start of the 22nd minute. Katrin Omarsdottir's shot was blocked, but Megan Jesolva collected the ball and shot it, forcing goalkeeper Chante' Sandiford to make the save. Six seconds later, Omarsdottir took another shot that was again blocked.
Omarsdottir helped kick start the last offensive for either side of the first half. With two seconds to go in the 39th minute, Omarsdottir's shot was blocked and went out, award the Bears a corner kick. Genessee Daughetee shot it, but it went high.
To begin the second half, UCLA took four corners and tallied one shot in the first 10 minutes. The Bears responded in kind with two corners and one shot of their own, but still not tallying a goal.
Less than two minutes after the Bruins scored, Lauren Battung fired off a shot that Sandiford had to save. Battung's shot was the final attack of the game for both sets of ursine.
Cal's trip to the City of Angels closes Sunday, Oct. 10 with a 1 p.m. tilt with No. 20/19 USC (7-2-2). The Trojans have earned Ws in the past three contests to improve their record with Cal to 9-5-1.
