DAVIDSON, N.C. -
The California field hockey team recorded three goals in the first half, and held off Radford, 3-2, in the quarterfinals of the NorPac Tournament Thursday afternoon in Davidson, N.C. The Golden Bears (9-8) entered the tournament as the No. 2 seed in the West. Senior Megan Psyllos, sophomore Rachelle Comeau and freshman Andrea Earle scored the three Cal goals.
"One of the things we wanted to do was get control of the game early, and we did that," head coach Shellie Onstead said. "We also made a lot of substitutions throughout the game that I think worked well. Overall, we did a good job of finishing it out."
The Bears scored early and often, recording all three goals in the first 20 minutes of the match. Comeau posted her score in the third minute. Comeau now has four goals on the season.
"Rachelle had a great game," Onstead said. "She did a lot of work on defense, and she's a forward, so that was great to see."
After Radford tied the match at one in the 11th minute, Psyllos and Earle notched their goals to give the Bears a 3-1 lead at halftime. Psyllos now leads the Bears in points on the season with 17 (seven goals, three assists).
Radford closed the gap with a score late in the second half, but it wasn't enough to complete the comeback.
Sophomore Deanna Kennedy earned her 21st career assist on Psyllos' goal. Kennedy is now tied for sixth on Cal's all-time career assists list. Jenna Long (2002-05) and Andrea Lo (2005-08) are tied for fourth with 28 assists.
In addition to her goal, Earle led all players with four shots on goal. Senior Lisa Lohre and freshman Jordan O'Reilly also had two shots on goal. The Bears outshot Radford, 18-10.
Cal will face Davidson, the No. 1 seed in the East and tournament host, tomorrow at 1 p.m. PT.
