COLUMBUS, Ohio - Caitlin Leverenz's school record in a victorious 200-yard breaststroke along with a win in the meet-ending relay propelled fifth-ranked California to capture its second straight collegiate team title at the AT&T Short Course National Championships on Saturday night at the McCorkle Aquatic Pavilion on the campus of Ohio State. The Golden Bears posted a score of 556 points, while USC was second with 495 points and Notre Dame was third with 228 points.

"It was a strong final session," Cal head coach Teri McKeever said, "with the school record for Caitlin in the 200 breast and a victory in the 400-free relay. There were lots of positives to build on as we approach the second phase of the season."

Leverenz won the 200 breaststroke in an automatic NCAA qualifying time of 2:06.55, which broke the previous Cal record of 2:09.38 set by Alexandra Ellis last spring.

Cal senior Erica Dagg, senior Hannah Wilson, freshman Nathalie Lindborg and junior Liv Jensen combined to swim a winning, automatic NCAA qualifying and meet-record time of 3:14.50 in the 400-yard freestyle relay. The Bears' A relay beat the previous record of 3:15.29 set by Auburn in 2008.

The Cal B relay of freshman Deborah Roth, junior Colleen Fotsch, junior Katherine Raatz and freshman Samantha Shellem posted a sixth-place finish in the 400-free relay in an NCAA B qualifying time of 3:20.24.

Other Bears in championship finals included Wilson (6th in NCAA B 48.68), Dagg (7th in NCAA B 49.10) and Lindborg (9th in NCAA B 49.43) in the 100 freestyle; freshman Deborah Roth, who finished eighth in the 200 backstroke in an NCAA B qualifying time of 1:55.48; and senior Amanda Sims, who placed ninth in the 200 butterfly in an NCAA B time of 1:56.39.

The Cal men swam in Columbus as well, and the combined team score of the Golden Bears (818.50) gave them the combined team victory. Host Ohio State was second (712.50) and USC was third (708.50).

In Austin, Texas, the Cal divers closed out the competition in the Texas Swimming and Diving Hall of Fame Invitational. Senior Laura Sanford placed ninth on the platform with a score of 220.70, while junior Molly Hayes finished 13th with a score of 169.25 on the platform.

The Cal women's swimmers compete on Sunday, Dec. 5, in the 2010 USA Swimming Long Course Invitational. The Cal women's divers next compete in the Bruin Diving Invitational that will run from Jan. 7-9, 2011, in Los Angeles.
