STANFORD, Calif. -
Fifth-ranked California lost to rival and fourth-ranked Stanford, 167-131, at Avery Aquatics Center on Saturday to close out the 2009-10 dual-meet season. The Golden Bears won six of the 16 events, including both relays. Their record fell to 5-2 (3-2 in the Pac-10), while the Cardinal's record improved to 9-0 (5-0, Pac-10).
The Cal foursome of sophomore Colleen Fotsch, freshman Caitlin Leverenz, junior Amanda Sims and sophomore Liv Jensen opened the Big Swim by claiming the 200-yard medley relay in an NCAA B consideration time of 1:40.69. The Bears followed with a win in the 1000-yard freestyle, as senior Lauren Boyle won in a time of 9:46.29 and senior Blake Hayter took third in a time of 9:51.50.
Sophomore Sara Isakovic, Cal's 2008 Slovenian Olympian, then took second behind Julia Smit, Stanford's 2008 U.S. Olympian, in the 200 freestyle, 1:45.31-1:46.48. Both times were NCAA B consideration times. Cal junior Hannah Wilson, a two-time Olympian for Hong Kong, finished fourth with an NCAA B time of 1:47.46, which was just four hundredths of a second off her season-best time. Senior teammate Amanda Larson posted her season-best time of 1:48.94 to take seventh.
Fotsch (season-best 55.10, NCAA B) and junior Erica Dagg (55.57, NCAA B) finished 2-3 in the 100 backstroke behind the Cardinal's Betsy Webb (53.47, NCAA B).
Leverenz later won both the 100- and 200-yard breaststrokes. In the 100, she posted an NCAA B consideration time of 1:01.81, with senior teammate Alexandra Ellis taking third in an NCAA B time of 1:01.98. Leverenz and Ellis also took first and third, respectively, in the 200; the freshman clocked a Cal season-best and an NCAA B time of 2:11.23 and the senior swam an NCAA B time of 2:12.03. Both of Ellis' times were season bests.
After the 100 breaststroke, Bears junior Katie Kastes (1:57.93, NCAA B) and Sims (1:59.06, NCAA B) placed 2-3 in the 200 butterfly.
Jensen won the 50 free in an NCAA B time of 22.64, which was just .06 seconds from tying the pool record and which is Cal's fastest 50-free time this season. Larson swam a season-best time of 23.17 to place fourth in the 50. Jensen later placed third in the 100 free with her fastest time (49.74, NCAA B) of the season, with Larson swimming a personal-best and NCAA B time of 50.09 to finish fourth.
In the 200 backstroke, freshman Samantha Pearson recorded Cal's fastest time of the year (2:00.10) to take second, while senior Heather White was fourth (2:00.65) for the Bears.
Boyle again swam the 1000- and 500-free double, taking a Cal-best third place in the 500 with an NCAA B time of 4:46.74. Kastes placed fourth in an NCAA B time of 4:47.35 and Isakovic was fifth in an NCAA B time of 4:47.69.
Fotsch and Sims swam Cal's best times in the 100 fly, with Fotsch taking second in an NCAA B time of 54.08 and Sims, the 2009 NCAA champion in the 100 fly, placing fourth in a time of 54.77. Elaine Breeden, another 2008 U.S. Olympian for Stanford, won both the 100 (52.95, NCAA B) and 200 (1:56.22, NCAA B) fly events.
In the 200-individual medley, the second to last race of the day, Leverenz and White collected Cal's top finishes. Leverenz took third in an NCAA B time of 1:59.28 and White was fourth in an NCAA B time of 2:00.59. Smit posted a pool-record 1:56.43 (NCAA B) to win the 200 IM. Leverenz's time was also below the previous pool-record time of 1:59.79.
The Cal A quartet of Isakovic, Wilson, Dagg and Jensen won the last event, the 400-free relay, in an NCAA B time of 3:19.44. Fotsch led off Cal's B relay, which finished second in 3:26.06. Her split of 50.41 marked Fotsch's fastest 100 free of the year.
"Alexandra Ellis did a great job, and Caitlin and Allie gave us a nice 1-2 punch in the breaststrokes," Cal head coach Teri McKeever said. "Colleen Fotsch had some breakthrough swims. Amanda Larson had a nice final dual meet as a senior.
"Liv Jensen, Samantha Pearson and Katie Kastes did great, too. There were some really good things to build on and be proud of. There's some fine turning to do as we move forward to Pac-10s and NCAAs. Overall, it was a real good meet, great weather and a real fun afternoon."
In diving, Stanford's Meg Hostage won the one- and three-meter springboards, while freshman Kelsey Heiken posted Cal's top marks in both events. Heiken finished third in both events, collecting an NCAA zone qualifying score of 284.10 at three meters and recording a score of 251.48 at one meter.
"I thought Kelsey did great," Cal diving coach Ben Herdt said. "That's something that's been a goal for her all year, and it was nice to see her achieve that goal in her final dual meet of the season. She'll get to participate in the postseason now.
"It's a credit to a couple things she learned in the past couple of weeks. She learned two new dives that increased her difficulty and that allowed her to get higher scores. She also learned how to spot, a technique for getting out of backward flipping dives. She had a big breakthrough in those two aspects."
The Bears return to action in the conference championships. The Cal swimmers compete in the Pac-10 Women's Swimming Championships from Feb. 24-27 in Long Beach, Calif., while the Cal divers compete in the Pac-10 Men's and Women's Diving Championships from Feb. 25-27 in Federal Way, Wash.
