No. 14/13 Cal Upset by Oklahoma State, 3-2
Feb. 27, 2010
Final Stats
PALM SPRINGS - Oklahoma State scored three runs in the sixth to power past the No. 14/13 California softball team on Saturday evening at the Cathedral City Classic. The Golden Bears (9-4) scored both their runs thanks to a Vernae Sevilla homer.
Neither team could connect for a hit until the top of the second when Oklahoma State's Amy Graham singled up the middle, but it was of no worth as the next batter - right fielder Megan Castle - grounded into a double play to end the inning.
The bottom of the second proved to be the highlight offensively for the Bears. Freshman catcher Lindsey Ziegenhirt led off and after two strikes, a ball and fouling two off, she singled up the middle.
The Bears would not put another runner into scoring position until the fourth when Jace Williams doubled down the left-field line. Williams moved to third when Frani Echavarria grounded out, but the OSU pitching got Taylor Kelly on a swinging strike out to close the inning.
The 2-0 lead came crumbling down in the Oklahoma State's end of the sixth inning. Third baseman Mariah Gearhart started things off with a single to short and Katelyn Bright followed suit, singling up the middle, as did Alysia Hamilton to load the bases. An error at second allowed Julie Ward to reach, move all three runners around, plating Gearhart. The next batter, Amy Graham reached on a fielder's choice with Ziegenhirt successfully applying the tag to Bright at home. Castle was up next for the Cowgirls and though she grounded out to short, Causus scored on the play. Tamara Brown continued the barrage and sealed the game for Oklahoma State with a single to short to plate Sammy Diffendaffer, who pinch ran for Ward.
Wallace singled to right in the bottom of the sixth, but that ended up being Cal's final hit of the game and Oklahoma State came away with the upset.
The Bears close out their weekend with games against Colorado State and Long Beach State on Sunday.
