Bears Slip Past Aggies, 2-0, in Game One Sunday

BERKELEY - The No. 13 California softball team scored a run in the first and third innings to achieve a 2-0 win against UC Davis in game one of Sunday's doubleheader at Levine-Fricke Field. Freshman pitcher Jolene Henderson gave up just one hit against the Aggies (8-15) to help the Bears improve to 18-4 overall.
In the bottom of the first, Shannon Thomas had the first hit of the game for either single with a strong single up the middle.
In the midst of Valerie Arioto's at bat, Thomas stole second to put her into scoring position. Arioto sent a pitch from Davis starter Dana Waldusky into center field for an RBI single, plating Thomas to give Cal a 1-0 lead.
The Bears began their half of the third with a bang thanks to a triple to left field by lead-off hitter Jamia Reid.
With Reid, who leads the team in stolen bases, waiting on go at third, Shannon Thomas popped up to left-field foul territory for a sacrifice RBI.
After the third inning, the Aggie pitching shut down the Cal batters in the following innings, giving up no hits though the Bears left one runner stranded. Arioto led the Bears with two hits and one RBI with Thomas also batting a run in.
Henderson pitched seven innings, allowing just one hit and one walk while striking out six Aggies.
The Bears scored two earned runs off four hits off Waldusky, who issued two walks and had six strike outs.
