Allie Welsh led the way with four points and Emily Abbood scored a hat trick in California's 11-9 nonconference victory over Quinnipiac on Friday at the Quinnipiac Field Hockey & Lacrosse Turf Field.
"Allie Welsh had another good game for us," Cal head coach Theresa Sherry said. "Defenses are paying more attention to her, but she's still able to get on the board. She's leading that group down there and doing a good job controlling the tempo.
"Emily was part of the late surge and was a spark in midfield and the attacking third. We were excited for that."
Cal scored first, with Welsh setting up senior midfielder Alyse Kennedy at 5:27, and held leads of 1-0 and 2-1 early. But the host Bobcats eventually led 4-3 at halftime and 6-3 at 2:03 into the second half.
Sophomore attacker Tara Arolla struck at 34:45 to pull Cal to within 6-4. But Lianne Toomey scored at 36:31 to create another three-goal lead for Quinnipiac at 7-4.
Cal forged back with three straight goals, as senior attacker Catie O'Mahoney scored at 39:09, sophomore midfielder Vail Horn converted an eight-meter shot at 39:49 and senior midfielder Alex Tickner scored unassisted at 41:01 to tie the game at 7-7.
After Lauren Matuszczak gave the Bobcats an 8-7 lead with her goal at 41:27, Cal scored four straight times to claim an 11-8 lead. Abbood, a junior midfielder, scored all three of her goals in that span, with the last one coming at 57:37, and Kennedy scored her second at 55:01.
Chelsea Guerrera added another goal for Quinnipiac at 58:02, and the Bears held on for the 11-9 win.
"It was a little ugly," Sherry added. "It was a battle. Quinnipiac is a really good team. We struggled with their intensity and draw controls. We were happy to pull out the win, especially with a long day of travel yesterday."
Quinnipiac earned a 13-8 advantage on draw controls.
Cal returns to action when it plays Fairfield at 9 a.m. PT on Sunday, March 21, in Fairfield, Conn.
