BURLINGTON, Vt. -
Alyse Kennedy scored a season-high five goals to lead California to a 17-8 nonconference victory over Vermont on Sunday at Moulton Winder Field. Kennedy's goal tally is the most for the Golden Bears since she scored six in a win over Saint Mary's in 2009. The game set other season milestones for the Bears on the attacking end: their 17 goals are the most they have scored this season and their six assists ties a season-high mark. Cal improved its record to 5-9, while the Catamounts fell to 4-10.
"Our team really wanted to make some major changes today," Cal head coach Theresa Sherry said. "We talked about a lot of the things we wanted to do all season, and we finally came out and did them today. They came out with intensity. It's not like there weren't mistakes, but they backed each other really well."
Cal outshot Vermont, 30-27, put a season-high tying 27 of its 30 shots on goal and forced Vermont goalkeeper Laura Barber to make 10 saves. The only other game in which Cal took more than 30 shots this season was in an 18-14 loss to Fairfield, against which the Bears took 33 shots. Kennedy's shots tally (7) ranks second in Cal's top single-game shots mark this season behind her eight against Fairfield.
Sherry pointed out that the attack featured a team effort.
"Vail Horn and Megan Takacs helped in the midfield and the attacking end by pushing the fast breaks and the tempo of the game," she said. "Alyse Kennedy did good job finishing today. Everybody did a good job in seeing the net and getting around the goalkeeper as compared to Friday's game. I'm really happy a lot of our goals were assisted. We assisted on six goals. It shows the girls were really working well together today."
Horn and Takacs (2 goals and 1 assist each) scored three points apiece. Freshman midfielder Carter Ellerman recorded the first assist of her Cal career, while freshman midfielder Sarah Milik made her first appearance as a Bear.
While the Catamounts produced plenty of shots, the defense did a fine job, and junior goalkeeper Allie Shropshire made 10 saves for the Bears.
"Tori Harrison and DennaFaye Herald were pretty solid on defense," Sherry said. "Camilla Hayes had two caused turnovers and was more consistent today as well. All three did a good job on defense and in getting the ball downfield. Denna had three ground balls and did a good job possessing in midfield and getting the ball to the attacking end, and Tori did the same thing."
Cal returns to the Golden State to close out the regular season against Mountain Pacific Sports Federation opponents Saint Mary's, on April 23 in Moraga, and Fresno State, on April 25 at Memorial Stadium.
