BERKELEY - After the No. 14 California women's soccer team scored first in the 20th minute against Fresno State in Friday's exhibition, the scoreboard held still for 63 minutes before both teams added a goal in the final seven minutes. The Bulldogs scored the equalizer at 82:45 before sophomore midfielder Betsy Hassett scored her and the Golden Bears' second goal of the game to take the final decision, 2-1.

"I thought we performed very well," Cal head coach Neil McGuire said. "I thought we were in control from start to finish, other than we lost the rhythm of play midway through the second half. Fresno State was very well organized and well disciplined. [Fresno State head coach] Brian Zwaschka has done a great job with his team."

Freshman Kate Bennett took a shot at 89:34 that was blocked. Hassett collected the rebound and fired off the game-winning shot.

"It was amazing because there were only 25 seconds or so left," Hassett noted of her second goal. "If we had drawn that game, it would have been a real disappointment after we had the lead for so much of the game."

Fresno State scored its lone goal in the 83rd minute. After receiving a pass from Laura Dodd, Janna Sadowitz, who had her back turned, turned and fired inside the right post past the diving Cal keeper Emily Kruger. Prior to the Bulldog goal, the referee issued two yellow cards within a span of four minutes to two different Fresno State players.

Cal's first score came after the Bears had dominated the field of play in the first 20 minutes of play. Junior Miranda White took off on a long run on the right flank and crossed the ball into Hassett, who put it between the posts with a toss of her head.

"Miranda had a perfect cross to me," Hassett said. "I just nodded it in."

In all, the Bears outshot the Bulldogs, 17-2. Alex Morgan had a game-high four shots on goal while Bassett, freshmen Kaitlyn Fitzpatrick and Kate Bennett each took three.

Lauren Hein and Kruger split time in goal.

The 2010 season officially gets underway next Friday, Aug. 20 with a nonconference match-up against LMU at 4 p.m. The campaign-opening weekend continues with a game against UC Irvine on Aug. 22 at 1 p.m.
