BERKELEY - Playing in its third straight double overtime game, No. 18/19 California lost to Saint Mary's, 2-1, in dramatic fashion in the Golden Bears' first game of the Cal Legacy Classic at Edwards Stadium. Both teams and the 383 fans in attendance experienced a rollercoaster of emotions involving what could have been a win for the Gaels in regulation, Davis Paul's late equalizer, a potential winning penalty kick, David Bingham's save of the penalty kick and ultimately a golden goal by Trevor Newquist.

Newquist headed in a corner kick taken by Joel Fumia to give the Gaels the 2-1 sudden victory at 102:26.

Cal's record stands at 1-1-1. Saint Mary's has a record of 2-0-1.

After a 0-0 first half, Saint Mary's scored first when Newquist and Nathan Arambula assisted on Jordan Grider's goal at 69:37. The Gaels led, 1-0.

With time ticking away, Cal put on the pressure, taking five of its eventual 14 shots after Grider's goal. One blast by Bears sophomore Tony Salciccia hit the crossbar at 82:37. Later, Gaels goalkeeper Doug Herrick pushed John Fitzpatrick's header over his bar at 88:41.

Nice passing by the Bears set up Paul's equalizer. Freshman midfielder Ryan Neil backheeled the ball to senior midfielder Anthony Avalos, who crossed to Fitzpatrick. The sophomore forward headed the ball to Paul, whose header found the back of the net with the clock reading 00:04.

More drama awaited in the second overtime period. Saint Mary's earned a penalty kick, but Bingham saved Dylan Leslie's ensuing shot at 101:50. The ball wound up over the endline to set up the corner kick that led to Saint Mary's golden goal.

Bingham ended the game with seven saves. Herrick tallied five saves for the Gaels, which outshot Cal, 15-14.

Paul, a senior forward, now leads Cal in points (5) and goals (2) through three games.

In other Cal Legacy Classic action on Friday, UNLV defeated Stanford, 2-1, on a one-overtime golden goal by Joaquin Rivas at 97:47 in Stanford, Calif. Also, Sacramento State beat UC Davis, 2-1, on a 54th-minute Matt Linenberger strike in Sacramento.

The Cal Legacy Classic will conclude on Sunday, Sept. 12, with three games: UNLV at Cal at 2 p.m., Saint Mary's at UC Davis at 5 p.m. in Davis, Calif., and Sacramento State at Stanford at 6 p.m.
