Davis Paul scored his third and fourth goals of the season in No. 18/19 California's 3-0 shutout of UNLV on Sunday in the Cal Legacy Classic at Edwards Stadium. The senior forward hit the gamewinner as well as the third goal for the Golden Bears, whose record improved to 2-1-1. The Rebels' evened their record to 2-2-0.
Sacramento State claimed the title of the Cal Legacy Classic after beating Stanford, 1-0, on Sunday night and posting the best record (2-0-0) and most points (6) in the tournament. Sacramento State midfielder Fernando Cabadas earned the MVP award and a spot on the Cal Legacy Classic All-Tournament Team. Based on tiebreakers, Cal finished second. The Bears placed three players - Paul, junior goalkeeper David Bingham and senior defender/forward Demitrius Omphroy - on the all-tournament team.
Cal sophomore forward John Fitzpatrick set up the first goal against UNLV, taking a shot that was deflected by a Rebel into the path of Paul, who scored from close range. Cal led, 1-0, at the 7:22 mark.
Senior defender A.J. Soares picked up Cal's second goal - and his first of the season - at 33:28, as sophomore defender Steve Birnbaum and freshman midfielder Ryan Neil assisted on the play deep in the UNLV penalty area.
The Bears took their 2-0 lead into halftime.
In the second half, Paul scored after another deflection; this time on a shot by senior midfielder Anthony Avalos. The Upland, Calif., product put away his second goal of the game at 67:44, and Cal led, 3-0
The Bears outshot the Rebels, 3-0, the rest of the way, and held on to capture the victory. Both Cal and UNLV finished with 1-1-0 records in the Cal Legacy Classic.
Cal outshot UNLV, 19-7, overall. Bingham made five saves for the Bears. UNLV goalie Simon Cook made four saves.
The Bears return to the field for two more nonconference games next week. They play at Santa Clara at 7 p.m. on Thursday, Sept. 16, at Buck Shaw Stadium and then host San Francisco at 3:30 p.m. on Sunday, Sept. 19, at Edwards Stadium as part of the Bay Area Classic.
