SANTA CLARA, Calif. - Hector Jimenez scored a goal and set up Anthony Avalos' eventual gamewinner to lead No. 21/25 California to a 2-1 victory over Santa Clara on Thursday night in the Bay Area Classic at Buck Shaw Stadium. Cal improved its record to 3-1-1 after the nonconference match. The host Broncos fell to 2-3-0.

At the 28:23 mark, Bears senior defender Demitrius Omphroy crossed into the Santa Clara box to Jimenez, and the senior midfielder scored past Broncos goalkeeper Kevin Klasila for his first goal of the season. Cal led, 1-0.

Jimenez assisted on the second goal at 40:22, lashing the ball across the goalmouth to an onrushing Avalos. The sophomore midfielder slotted the ball past Klasila to give Cal a 2-0 lead it would take into halftime. The play produced Avalos' first goal and Jimenez's second assist of the year.

Erik Hurtado pulled one back for Santa Clara at 56:33, making a strong run into the box and firing past junior goalie David Bingham to make the score 2-1.

Hurtado took Santa Clara's last three shots of the game. He shot wide at 76:50, a Cal field player blocked his 85th minute effort and the Bronco shot wide again with seven seconds remaining.

Jimenez forced a Klasila save at 84:23 for Cal's last shot.

Bingham made three saves, as Santa Clara outshot the Bears, 14-12. Klasila had four saves.

Cal plays its last game of the Bay Area Classic when it hosts San Francisco at 3:30 p.m. on Sunday, Sept. 19, at Buck Shaw Stadium.
