BERKELEY -
John Fitzpatrick scored his first goal of the season at an opportune time, giving No. 21/25 California a 1-0 overtime win over San Francisco with his 94th-minute golden goal in the Bay Area Classic on Sunday at Edwards Stadium. Since the Golden Bears and Stanford each posted two wins in the Bay Area Classic, and USF and Santa Clara had two losses each, Cal and Stanford are co-champions of the local tournament. The Bears improved their record to 4-1-1 after the nonconference victory. The Dons fell to 1-3-1.
The host Bears held much of the possession in the first half and had the advantage in shots (5-1) and corner kicks (5-0) over USF, but halftime score still read 0-0. They forced Dons goalkeeper Brendan Roslund into making three saves in the first 45 minutes, while Cal junior goalie David Bingham made one save.
In the second half, both teams were able to unlock the defenses somewhat, though USF forged a 5-3 shot advantage. Cal put on the pressure in the final 10 minutes, as senior forward Davis Paul fired a shot that Roslund saved in the 82nd minute and senior midfielder Hector Jimenez took a close-range header a USF defender nodded over his crossbar in the 85th minute.
The Dons' Oscar Englund produced the final good scoring chance in regulation with an 86th-minute shot that Bingham saved. The teams' took the 0-0 tie to sudden-victory overtime.
Cal was the aggressor in overtime, producing two shots and three corner kicks. On the last corner, Bears sophomore midfielder Tony Salciccia found sophomore defender Steve Birnbaum, who headed the ball to Fitzpatrick. The sophomore forward fired past Roslund for the gamewinner.
The Bears wound up outshooting USF, 10-6, and had a 12-8 advantage in corner kicks. Bingham made six saves for Cal; Roslund made four for USF.
Cal plays its last nonconference game of the year when it hosts Denver as part of the Stanford Nike Invitational at 4 p.m. on Sept. 24 at Edwards Stadium.
