Sept. 3, 2010

Box Score

BLOOMINGTON, Ind. - Senior forward Davis Paul scored the winning goal in the 107th minute to lead California to a 2-1 overtime upset win over No. 20/21 Indiana in both teams' season opener on Friday night in the adidas/IU Credit Union Classic. Junior goalkeeper David Bingham came up big for the 1-0 Golden Bears, making seven saves as the host Hoosiers (0-1) outshot Cal, 21-10, at Bill Armstrong Stadium.

"Davis finished the chance really well," Cal head coach Kevin Grimes said.

The Bears had scored first off of senior midfielder Servando Carrasco's strike in the 30th minute. Senior midfielder Hector Jimenez, who led the Pac-10 in assists with nine in 2009, and Paul picked up assists on Carrasco's goal, which made the score 1-0.

Junior forward Will Bruin, assisted by freshman midfielder Harrison Petts, scored in the 37th minute to tie the game at 1-1 for Indiana.

Carrasco set up the golden goal, sending the ball across the six-yard box to Paul, who fired a low, line drive past sophomore goalie Luis Soffner. The latter made one save for the game, with that coming in the second overtime period.

The Bears improved to 2-4 in the all-time series with Indiana.

Cal concludes the adidas/IU Credit Union Classic when it plays at No. 18 Notre Dame at 4 p.m. PT on Sunday, Sept. 5.
