NOTRE DAME, Ind. -
David Bingham made nine saves in California's 0-0 tie with No. 18 Notre Dame, propelling the Golden Bears to the title of the adidas/IU Credit Union Classic on Sunday night at Alumni Stadium. The Golden Bears won the Indiana tournament by virtue of their result against the Irish and Cal's 2-1 two-overtime win over the Hoosiers on Sept. 3. After the first two games of the 2010 season, Cal has a 2-0 record, while Notre Dame stands at 0-1-1.
Cal senior defender A.J. Soares was named the adidas/IU Credit Union Classic Defensive MVP. He joined Bingham, a junior goalkeeper, senior forward Davis Paul and senior midfielder Servando Carrasco on the all-tournament team.
"It was a successful weekend," Cal head coach Kevin Grimes said. "We look forward to Wednesday's training so we can continue to improve."
Also in the Indiana tournament, the Hoosiers blew out UCLA, 5-1, earlier on Sunday in Bloomington. Indiana and UCLA both finished with 1-1-0 records, but the Hoosiers placed second with a +3 goal differential. The Bruins were third and Notre Dame was fourth. IU's Will Bruin (4 goals) earned the offensive MVP award.
Against the Irish, Bingham came up big for the second straight game, making important saves and cutting out several crosses by the Irish, which outshot Cal, 28-16. He made seven saves to preserve the victory over the Hoosiers. After two games, Bingham has compiled a 0.41 goals-against average.
Sophomore midfielder Tony Salciccia led Cal with four shots against Notre Dame and forced Irish goalie Will Walsh to make two of his four saves.
Bears senior midfielder Hector Jimenez, who usually wears No. 9, wore No. 31 in tonight's game.
Cal returns to action when it hosts the Cal Legacy Classic on Friday, Sept. 10, and Sunday, Sept. 12, at Edwards Stadium. The Bears play Saint Mary's at 4 p.m. on Friday and take on UNLV at 2 p.m. next Sunday.
