STANFORD, Calif. - After upsetting the then-No. 1 Stanford last weekend, the California men's gymnastics team lost to the Cardinal, 364.400-358.800, on Saturday evening at Burnham Pavilion. The Golden Bears (1-1) took home event wins on vault and high bar, but it was not enough to defeat the Cardinal (1-1) two weeks in a row. In a fantastic outing, Glen Ishino and Dennis Mannhart tied for first in the all-around.
Stanford won its first outing on floor, 61.400-58.900. Bryan del Castillo paced the Bears with a 14.900, but the Cardinal took the first four spots. Ever so slightly behind del Castillo was Cal's Dennis Mannhart with a 14.800, followed by Glen Ishino (14.700) and Eric Haeussler (14.500).
Pommel horse went to Stanford, as well, with del Castillo taking fourth with a 14.800. Stanford's John Martin won it, scoring a 15.300. Ishino was next for the Bears with a 14.300, followed by Daniel Geri, who notched a 14.200. Cal's scores were not enough to overpower the Cardinal, which won 59.400-57.400.
Stanford took home the rings title, 60.900-59.600 thanks to an event-winning 15.800 from Tim Gentry. Ishino was first amongst his Cal teammates, scoring a 15.200. Mannhart was second of the Bears (15.100) and Steven Lacombe was third in blue and gold (15.000).
Vault, an event the Bears do not normally specialize in, went to Cal by .100 - 63.000-62.9000. While Stanford's Eddie Penev (16.300) and Gentry (16.100) took first and second on the event, it was a combination of high scores by the Bears that gave Cal the ultimate advantage. Christian Monteclaro and Ishino tied for third with a 15.800 while freshman Matthew del Junco, in his first outing as a Bear, and Mannhart each notched a 15.600.
On parallel bars, it was two tenths of a point that determined the winner - Stanford, 60.100-59.900. Josh Dixon and Ryan Lieberman of Stanford along with Mannhart all tied for first with 15.400s. Donothan Bailey was next in live with a 15.300, followed by Geri at 15.000.
Cal won high bar for the second consecutive week, besting the Cardinal, 60.000-59.700. Ishino won the event (15.800) while Mannhart tied for third (14.900). Also notching high scores were Bailey with a 14.700 and del Castillo with a 14.600.
The Cal squad has a break from team competition in the next couple of weeks. A select number of Bears will travel to the Winter Cup Challenge in Las Vegas. The first round occurs on Thursday, Feb. 3 and those who advance from those prelims to the finals will compete Saturday, Feb. 5. The meet selects the members for the U.S. Senior National team.
