SAN DIEGO -
For the second straight game, California allowed a late goal on the road and sustained a Pac-12 Conference loss - this time against San Diego State, which won 2-1 on Sunday at the SDSU Sports Deck. Freshman midfielder Omid Jalali had scored the first goal of his Golden Bears career to tie the game at 1-1 in the second half. But Cal gave up a strike to the Aztecs' Jordan Angaro in the 85th minute for the deciding goal.
The Bears fell to 3-4-2 (0-2-0 in the Pac-12), while SDSU improved to 7-1-2 (2-0-0 Pac-12).
Cal almost scored at 16:49, but a Bears goal was called back due to offside. Freshman goalkeeper Kevin Peach made three saves in the first half, including a diving stop on an 18-yard Myles Byass shot at 4:52 and a stop on a 27-yard Jose Altamirano strike that Peach tipped over the crossbar at 23:23.
After a 0-0 first half, the host Aztecs got on the scoreboard at 56:27 when Abraham Villon assisted on Ongaro's initial goal, which he put away from 17 yards out.
At 68:46, freshman midfielder Seth Casiple set up Jalali, who scored from eight yards. The assist was Casiple's team-high sixth of the season.
The decisive goal came at 84:55, when Tyler Smith passed to Daniel Steres, who nodded the ball down to Ongaro. The latter scored from 11 yards away.
Cal did well to possess the ball after the goal. Sophomore forward Michael Shaddock tried to give the Bears the go-ahead goal at 71:41, but SDSU goalie Blake Hylen saved his 25-yard blast.
Neither team recorded a shot the rest of the way, as SDSU held onto the win.
Peach made a total of six saves for the Bears. Hylen made two saves the Aztecs, who outshot Cal, 20-7.
Cal next plays Pac-12 rival Stanford on the Farm on Oct. 9.
