Cal Falls to Oregon State, 2-1

CORVALLIS, Ore. - California outshot Oregon State, 17-7, and Steve Birnbaum scored the second goal of his career, but the Golden Bears still lost to Oregon State, 2-1, on Friday at Paul Lorenz Field. The Golden Bears fell to 3-6-4 (0-4-2 in the Pac-12), while the Beavers improved to 4-8-2 (2-3-1 Pac-12).
"We had dominance in play for long portions of the game," Cal head coach Kevin Grimes said. "With the number of quality chances we had in the first half, you need one to go your way. That was probably the difference in the game."
The Bears outshot Oregon State, 10-2, in the first half. But a lack of finishing by both teams and two saves from OSU goalkeeper Steve Spangler kept the match tied, 0-0, at halftime.
The Beavers got on the scoreboard first when Roberto Farfan scored from the top of the box at 49:40. Emery Welshman was credited with an assist.
An Oregon State foul on Cal sophomore midfielder Alec Sundly led to the equalizer. Birnbaum, a junior defender, tied the match at 1-1 when he converted a penalty kick at 54:26. That marked Birnbaum's first goal since he scored last season against Oregon State in Berkeley.
Welshman untied the match when he accepted a throw in, forged into Cal's box and scored past sophomore goalkeeper Robby Gogatz at 69:00.
Cal produced two shots the rest of the way. But junior midfielder Tony Salciccia's header at 83:34 was blocked as was Sundly's effort at 87:24.
The Bears next play Washington in Seattle at 1 p.m. on Sunday, Oct. 23.
