Junior forward John Fitzpatrick scored his team-high fourth goal of the year and California tied rival Stanford, 1-1, in double overtime on Sunday night at the Cardinal's Laird Q. Cagan Stadium. The Golden Bears' record moved to 3-4-3 (0-2-1 in the Pac-12 Conference). Stanford's record is now 3-6-2 (0-2-1 Pac-12).
"It was a great performance by the team," Cal head coach Kevin Grimes said. "We need to continue to build on games like tonight."
Cal extended its unbeaten streak against Stanford to seven games, as the Bears won their previous six matches against the Cardinal and last lost to their rival in 2007.
The Bears took a 1-0 lead at 26:15 in the first half when Fitzpatrick headed in freshman midfielder Connor Hallisey's cross.
Cal took its 1-0 lead into halftime.
Stanford tied the match at 77:47, when Adam Jahn scored on a 25-yard free kick to make the score 1-1.
Cal sophomore goalkeeper Robby Gogatz made two saves in 110 minutes, while counterpart Jason Dodson notched five saves for Stanford.
Tonight's match marked Cal's fourth overtime game of the season. The result also gave the Bears a 1-0-1 record at Cagan Stadium this season, as the Bears blanked Vermont, 3-0, on Sept. 23 in the Stanford Nike Classic.
The Bears and the Cardinal complete their home and home conference series when they play on Veterans' Day on Nov. 11 in Berkeley in the regular-season finale for both teams.
Cal next hosts a pair of conference matches when Oregon State comes to Edwards Stadium at 4 p.m. on Friday, Oct. 14, and Washington hits Goldman Field at 2 p.m. on Sunday, Oct. 16.
