Nov. 4, 2011
Box Score
BERKELEY -
California goalkeeper Kevin Peach made eight saves against No. 8 UCLA, but the Golden Bears could not hold off the Bruins completely and fell, 2-0, to UCLA on Friday at Edwards Stadium in a Pac-12 Conference match. The Bruins are now Pac-12 champions, wresting the conference title from the Bears, who claimed what turned out to be the last Pac-10 crown in 2010.
Eder Arreola scored from the far corner of Cal's penalty area to give UCLA a 1-0 lead at 36:41.
Cal trailed by the same score at halftime.
Despite facing a barrage of shots - UCLA outshot Cal, 21-8, for the game - Cal remained down one goal for much of the second half, thanks in large part to Peach's five second-half saves. A seventh overtime match of the season wasn't out of the question for the Bears.
But Chandler Hoffman, who had provided an assist on Arreola's goal, won a 50-50 ball with Peach and scored with just 1:27 left on the clock. The Bruins went onto to take the 2-0 victory.
Cal hosts San Diego State in another Pac-12 clash on Sunday, Nov. 6, at 2 p.m. at Edwards Stadium. The Bears' final regular-season game takes place Nov. 11 - Veterans Day - against rival Stanford also at Edwards.
