TEMPE, Ariz. - The No. 12 California softball team ended its weekend in the same fashion in which it began - with a win. The Golden Bears rained two runs in the top of the first and Elia Reid smacked a solo shot for the third run for Cal to drop Indiana, 3-0, on Sunday morning. Cal finished its season-opening weekend in the desert with a 3-1 record, while the Hoosiers drop to 2-3.
Sophomore right-hander Jolene Henderson started her fourth game of the weekend, throwing the complete-game win with a weekend-high seven strikeouts. The Bears worked IU starter Morgan Melloh for seven hits and three earned runs though she fanned eight Bears.
Britt Vonk and Jace Williams each tallied two hits with Jordan Wallace, Elia Reid and Lindsey Ziegenhirt accounting for the three RBI.
Jamia Reid led off the game, slapping the ball to third, easily beating the throw to first, which went into the dugout, allowing Reid to move to second. Britt Vonk slapped it to third and that throw to first was on target but late, giving Cal runners on the corners. During Frani Echavarria's at bat, which ultimately ended in a K, Vonk stole second. Jace Williams had a slap single to first to load the bases for one of Cal's big swingers - sophomore catcher Lindsey Ziegenhirt.
Ziegenhirt smacked the ball for a long fly to left, with the catch being made at the fence, allowing Reid to score and Vonk and Williams to move to third and second, respectively. Jordan Wallace singled through the left side to plate Vonk. On the throw, Wallace moved to second with Williams holding steady at third. Fortunately for the Hoosiers, the Cal scoring stopped there with Indiana pitcher Morgan Melloh fanning Victoria Jones, but the Bears had established a key 2-0 lead.
The bottom of the first went off without a hitch for the Bears with two successful ground outs and one strikeout. In the top of the first, it was a role reversal with Jolene Henderson striking out to start things off. That was of no importance, however, for Elia Reid went oppo in the next at bat with a solo shot to put the Bears up by three.
The Bears maintained that 3-0 lead for the rest of the game, thanks to solid defense and a two-hitter performance by Henderson.
Next weekend, the Bears stay in the state of California for their next tournament, heading south to San Diego. On Friday, Feb. 18 Cal faces off against Missouri (2 p.m.) and UC Davis (4:30 p.m.). Saturday will see the squad play UCSB at 2p.m. and San Diego at 4:30 p.m. A single-game Sunday closes the weekend at 9 a.m. against Howard.
