Feb. 22, 2011
Box Score
STANFORD, CALIF. -
Three Cal pitchers combined for 10 strikeouts, but it wasn't quite enough as the No. 17-ranked Golden Bears (2-1) fell to No. 8 Stanford, 3-2, Tuesday night (Feb. 22) at Sunken Diamond.
Stanford's Kenny Diekroeger hit a lead-off homer off of Golden Bear junior right-hander Dixon Anderson in the second inning before Anderson proceeded to strikeout the side. The Cardinal then added two more runs in the third inning off Anderson (0-1, 5.2 innings, seven hits, three runs, three walks, five strikeouts) on Tyler Gaffney's RBI single to first base and Diekroeger's single through the left side of the infield to take a 3-0 advantage,
But, the Bears came back with two runs in the top of the fifth inning on junior shortstop Marcus Semien's bases loaded walk and junior center fielder Chad Bunting's sacrifice fly to left field to get within one run, 3-2.
Cal had its chances offensively to catch the Cardinal, but stranded four base runners in the last two innings. On the mound, Cal freshman left-hander Kyle Porter (two strikeouts in 1.1 innings) and junior right-hander Matt Flermer (1.0 inning, three strikeouts) were stellar, limiting Stanford to no runs.
Sophomore third baseman Mitch Delfino was 2-for-3 for the Bears.
Cal next enters the Caravelle Resort's Tournament, Feb. 25-27, at BB&T Coastal Field in Conway, S.C. The Bears open the tournament Friday, Feb. 25 at 4 p.m. (ET) versus host Coastal Carolina.
