Final Stats
CATHEDRAL CITY, Calif. - Not only did Saturday see the No. 14 California softball team score its second most runs of the young 2011 season, but those 11 runs came in an 11-3 trouncing of No. 20 LSU, giving the Golden Bears their second win over a ranked opponent this year. Additionally, not only did sophomore pitcher Jolene Henderson pitch the complete-game win, giving up just three runs against a potent Tiger offense, but she also hit a three-run homer in the top of the seventh push Cal (8-1) past LSU (10-5).
The Bears scored at least one run in all but two innings, establishing a five-run lead before the Tigers could even get on the board with three runs in the bottom of the third. Jordan Wallace played an instrumental role in getting past LSU with a three-run home run in the top of the third. Lindsey Ziegenhirt also drove in two RBI of her own.
Jamia Reid and Britt Vonk further confirmed their worth in the lead-off and second spots with four hits apiece, Reid scored thrice and Vonk twice. The Bears worked Tiger starter Rachele Fico for five earned runs before Meaghan Patterson came in, giving up six earned runs. LSU committed five errors to Cal's one.
Top 1 - Cal 1, LSU 0:
Jamia Reid notched a lead-off single through the hole between third and short. During Britt Vonk's at bat, Reid stole second and the throw down went awry into center field, allowing Reid to score.
Top 2 - Cal 4, LSU 0:
For the second inning in a row, the Bears had a lead-off single, with Henderson filling that role this time with a smack to left. Next up, Frani Echavarria laid down a bunt and beat the throw to first, giving Cal runners at first and second. Jordan Wallace sent the ball flying to right with a long homer, plating herself, Henderson and Echavarria.
Bottom 2 - Cal 4, LSU 0:
Henderson and the Cal defense sent the Tigers down in order with three ground outs.
Top 3 - Cal 5, LSU 0:
The Bears almost did not have a lead-off single with Britt Vonk starting things off by flying out to center, but it was called back on account of an illegal pitch. Not letting the second chance go to waste, Vonk singled to first. Jace Williams put her team ahead of her stat line with a successful sacrifice bunt, moving Vonk to second. Henderson tallied her first of her four RBI of the game with a hit to shallow left, scoring the fast-moving Vonk.
Bottom 3 - Cal 5, LSU 3:
It was the Tigers' turn to start an inning with a hit as Cassie Trosclair singled off a soft slap to third and then advanced to second on a wild pitch. She would have moved over anyway for Simone Heyward walked. Trosclair moved into scoring position on an illegal pitch and came home to score with a single down the left-field line from Juliana Santos. With Santos at second and Heyward at third, Anissa Young walked to load the bases for Tammy Wray. Wray's hit took a hop and went over the center-field wall for a ground-rule double, scoring Santos and Heyward.
Top 4 - Cal 7, LSU 3:
The first three batters of the fourth inning all earned singles with Elia Reid starting things off with a perfectly placed bunt in the 1-3 hole. Jamia Reid was up next and slapped it to third. The third baseman fielded it but no one was covering at second so both Reids were safe. Vonk slapped it to third and once again, defensive deficiencies meant no one was covering third so the Bears had the bases loaded for Williams. Williams got hit by a pitch for a trip to first and an RBI. Still with the bases loaded, Ziegenhirt patiently waited through a full count for a walk, plating Jamia Reid.
Top 5 - Cal 7, LSU 3:
The fifth was the first inning in which the Bears did not get a lead-off hit. They ended the inning with one hit and two runners stranded while the Tigers committed one error.
Top 7 - Cal 11, LSU 3:
After her sister had struck out swinging, Jamia Reid had a stand-up triple to left field. Vonk slapped it to short, Jamia Reid held the shortstop's attention just long enough to prevent any play at first being possible. Vonk stole second to put runners at second and third for Ziegenhirt, who hit a line drive off the pitcher, scoring Jamia Reid. LaRisa Jones came in as a runner for Ziegenhirt before Henderson strode to the plate. The sophomore sent the ball flying over center field to put Cal up, 11-3, for good.
