Final Stats
CATHEDRAL CITY, Calif. - The No. 14 California softball team capped off its four-game weekend with a 2-0 win over Cal Poly on Sunday afternoon. At the Cathedral City Classic, the Golden Bears went a perfect 4-0 to up their overall record to 9-1.
The Golden Bears scored once in the first and the sixth to top the Mustangs. Jace Williams had the first RBI and Frani Echavarria had a high fly ball to center that fell for a hit to score Williams in the sixth. Jolene Henderson earned her fourth win of the weekend and ninth of the year in the circle.
Bottom 1 - Cal Poly 0, Cal 1:
Jamia Reid led off with a triple to left, capitalizing on a Mustang outfield that was pulled in thinking she would slap. Reid held steady at third when Britt Vonk put a ground ball down to third. Jace Williams hit one back to the pitcher, who made the throw to first, allowing Reid to score the first run of the game.
Bottom 4 - Cal Poly 0, Cal 1:
Williams began the bottom half of the inning with a base hit up the middle. Lindsey Ziegenhirt followed it up with a bloop single to center. Williams and Ziegenhirt stayed at second and first, respectively, as the Cal Poly center fielder made a great catch in left, robbing Jolene Henderson of a hit. Frani Echavarria grounded out to first, but it was not for naught with Williams and Ziegenhirt moving to third and second with two away. They would be stranded with Jordan Wallace hitting a one-hopper to short to end the inning.
Top 5 - Cal Poly 0, Cal 1:
The Bears made quick work of the Mustangs. Cochiolo grounded out to Jace Williams at third with Williams demonstrating deft moves to her left. Wallace made a 3U on Walker and Romano flied out to right to end the inning.
Top 6 - Cal Poly 0, Cal 1:
The Mustangs threatened with a lead-off hit from Westlund, who slapped a base hit up the middle. Brown slapped it to second but a quick throw got her at first while Westlund moved to second. Correia hit one back at Henderson in the circle for the second out and Henderson struck out Cahn for the final out.
Bottom 6 - Cal Poly 0, Cal 2:
Williams singled with a hard hit off the shortstop's glove. Henderson tallied a hit to center, moving Williams to third and advancing to second herself on the throw to third. Frani Echavarria hit a high fly ball to left center that dropped in for a hit, allowing Williams to score while Henderson held at second.
Diane Leider came in to run for Henderson. Wallace ripped a hit to right center, but there was Mustang there ready to catch it. Ashley Decker struck out to end the inning.
Top 7: Cal Poly 0, Cal 2:
In the Mustangs' last change, Lund hit a liner but Jordan Wallace was there to make the catch. Patton hit a grounder to short but the throw was too low and she was safe. Cochiolo flied out to Jamia Reid in left for the second out of the inning. Walker gave proof to her namesake with a walk, giving Cal Poly runners at first and second. Sobczak came into pitch hit and slapped a high chopper to Jace Williams at third for a base hit. With the bases loaded and two outs, Westlund flied out to Jamia Reid to end the game.
Next Week on the Diamond:
The Bears spice things up next week with a mid-week match at UC Davis. The Bears will travel to the central valley for a March 2 tilt against the Aggies beginning at 2 p.m. The tournament play just doesn't stop and next weekend, Cal heads south but not that far - making the trip to Fullerton for the DeMarini Fullerton Tournament. In Fullerton, the Bears will place Northwestern (9 a.m.) and IPFW (11:15 a.m.) on March 4. Things wrap up that Saturday with a 9 a.m. game versus Iowa and an 11:15 a.m. match versus Murray State.
