California dropped a nonconference match to second-ranked Northwestern, 19-8, on Friday afternoon at Lakeside Field. The Golden Bears evened their record at 3-3, while the Wildcats improved to 6-0.
Junior attacker Tara Arolla led the Bears with three goals and sophomore midfielder Megan Takacs also scored three points with one goal and two assists.
"I am actually proud of how our team fought today," Cal head coach Theresa Sherry said. "We are really short on players right now due to injuries, but the girls that could go really worked hard today. We made a lot of mistakes, but we had many brilliant moments as well. We are focusing on the positive things we did this game as we move onto the next phase of our season."
Northwestern took a 9-3 halftime lead, as Cal got goals from sophomore midfielder Melissa Humphrey at 7:08, Arolla at 14:12 and sophomore attacker Gina Holslag at 19:05. Arolla and Holslag converted eight-meter shots to score for the Bears.
The Bears struck for more goals in the second half, but the Wildcats still outscored Cal, 10-5, in the last period to claim the 19-8 victory. Arolla notched her second of the game at 32:11 and Takacs scored at 37:59. Down 18-5, the Bears went on a 3-0 run, with Takacs assisting Arolla to complete the latter's hat trick at 50:17, Humphrey scoring her second at 58:55 and junior midfielder Vail Horn striking at 59:15.
But Northwestern scored nine seconds from the end of the game for the final goal of the 19-8 Cal loss.
Senior goalkeeper Allie Shropshire made a game-high 11 saves in less than 52 minutes of work for the Bears.
Cal returns to Berkeley to host Lafayette on March 15 and Navy on March 17.
