No. 20 Cal Baseball Defeats 49ers, 6-1

SAN FRANCISCO, CALIF. - The California baseball team (10-4) finished the 2011 Cal Baseball Classic at AT&T Park in San Francisco as the only undefeated team, upending Long Beach State, 6-1, in the final tournament game Sunday (March 13). The Golden Bears finished the three days with victories over Louisiana-Lafayette (7-6 Friday), No. 18 Rice (7-6 in 15 innings Saturday) and finally the 49ers. Every other of the five teams (including San Francisco and UC Santa Barbara) had at least one loss as Cal hosted the inaugural college baseball tournament at the home of the 2010 World Champion San Francisco Giants.

On Sunday, the Bears got big offensive production from sophomore second baseman Tony Renda (3-for-4, double, two RBI), sophomore left fielder Vince Bruno (2-for-3, RBI double) and junior catcher Chadd Krist (2-for-4, two RBI). The winning pitcher for Cal was junior right-hander Dixon Anderson, who improved his record to 2-1 by going 5.2 innings with six hits, no runs, no walks and four strikeouts. Anderson pitched the first part of the game before an hour and 16 minute rain day ended his day.

Sophomore right-hander Logan Scott (2.1 innings, three hits, one run, one walk, two strikeouts) and junior right-hander Matt Flemer (1.0 inning, one strikeout) pitched the remainder of the contest for the Bears.

Against the 49ers, the Bears scored two runs in the third inning on an RBI double to right center field by Bruno and an RBI single through the left side by Krist off Long Beach Starter Shawn Stuart (2-1, 4.0 innings, seven hits, five runs, one walk, two strikeouts).

Cal notched three more runs in the fifth inning on an RBI single to left fielder by Renda, another single to left field by Krist and a fielder's choice RBI by junior right fielder Chad Bunting.

In the sixth inning the Bears added another run on Renda's RBI double down the left field line.

Other tournament scores during the inaugural Cal Baseball Class included Long Beach State topping Rice, 2-1, and USF defeating UC Santa Barbara, 3-2, on Friday. In Saturday's games, UC Santa Barbara defeated Louisiana-Lafayette, 4-2 and Long Beach State topped San Francisco, 5-4. Finally in earlier contests Sunday, USF defeated Louisiana-Lafayette, 4-0, and Rice upped UC Santa Barbara, 2-1.

The Bears next host San Francisco on Wednesday, March 16 at 2:30 p.m. at Evans Diamond.
