Final Stats

HONOLULU - As the No. 1 seed on the final day of the Chevron Spring Fling Classic, the No. 9/10 California softball team continued its winning ways with a 6-0 victory over Cleveland State on Saturday afternoon. With the win, the Golden Bears now stand at 21-2 and head into the championship game at 7 p.m. PT against the winner of the BYU-Hawaii game.

After 2.5 innings of scoreless play, the Bears broke things wide open with five runs in the bottom of the third. Jace Williams, Jolene Henderson, Victoria Jones and Jordan Wallace all tallied RBI in the third to score Elia Reid, Ashley Decker, Britt Vonk, Williams and Jones.

In the top of the fifth, Vonk singled up the middle to score Elia Reid, who had reached after being hit by a pitch, for Cal's sixth run of the game.

Top 1 - CSU 0, Cal 0:

Right fielder Jessica Burt struck out and shortstop Andrea Nagy grounded out to short thanks to a stellar tag applied by first baseman Jordan Wallace. Pitcher Tess Sito walked but was left stranded after second baseman Dara Toman grounded out with a two-hopper to Victoria Jones at second.

Top 2 - CSU 0, Cal 0:

The Bears sent the Vikings down in order with a swinging strikeout (catcher Amy Powell), a fly out to center (third baseman Gabby Gillilan) and a second swinging strikeout (designated player Kala Allred).

Top 3 - CSU 0, Cal 0:

It was back-to-back-to-back strikeouts from Henderson, getting first baseman Katelyn Ciminelli, center fielder Alicia Nichols and Burt swinging.

Bottom 3 - CSU 0, Cal 5:

Elia Reid led off with a bunt single. After fouling off a pitch, Ashley Decker slapped the next one to get aboard when the second baseman over ran the grounder, allowing Reid to move to third. Vonk slapped the ball to third, where Elia Reid expertly teetered between going home and heading back to third, drawing the throw. All three runners - Reid, Decker and Vonk - were safe with no outs on the board. Jace Williams then singled down the left-field line, scoring Reid, moving Decker to third while Vonk went to second. Henderson hit an RBI ground out to second, plating Decker.

Echavarria went down swinging for the second out of the inning before Victoria Jones singled to left, bringing home Vonk and Williams while advancing to second on the throw. With Jones at second, Jordan Wallace dropped her second hit of the game down, this one into short center to plate Jones. The ball bounced past the center fielder allowing Wallace to take two. Ziegenhirt grounded out to short to end the five-run inning.

Top 4 - CSU 0, Cal 5:

A ground out and strike out started the inning, giving Cal two outs that would prove clutch. Toman singled through the left side and advanced to second when Powell hit one up the middle. Luckily for the Bears, Gillilan grounded out to Wallace at first to end the fourth.

Bottom 4 - CSU 0, Cal 6:

Elia Reid started things off with a free trip to first after being plunked with the ball. Decker laid down a bunt single towards third and reached first before the throw while Elia rounded second for third on the throw. On the first pitch of Vonk's at bat, Decker stole second. Vonk singled to center, scoring Reid and advancing Decker to third. Vonk stole second but did not get any further for Williams lined out to second and Vonk was doubled up for the second out. Henderson hit a rocket to third but a rocket throw got her out at first.

Top 5 - CSU 0, Cal 6:

As the rain started to fall in Honolulu, the Cal defense did what it could to get through the inning as quickly as possible. Henderson got Allred to strike out and then Ciminelli flew out to left and Nichols struck out swinging.

Bottom 5 - CSU 0, Cal 6:

Allred came in to pitch for the Vikings and promptly got Echavarria to ground out to first and Jones to foul out in right. Wallace struck out for the final out.

Top 6 - CSU 0, Cal 6:

Sito registered a two-out double down the right-field line with Decker doing a nice job of preventing a third base for Sito. Toman hit a comebacker to Henderson in the circle, where the sophomore pitcher neatly handled the ball for the third out of the inning, leaving Sito stranded at second.
