BERKELEY - Though they split the event wins equally, the No. 4 California men's gymnastics team lost, 360.950-354.525, to No. 2 Stanford on Friday night at Haas Pavilion. Bryan del Castillo, Jeffrey Langenstein and Glen Ishino all notched event wins in the Golden Bears' final home meet of 2011 in front of 2,203 fans.
The Bears won the first two events - floor and pommel horse - but the Cardinal won the next two - vault and rings - to take a 242.450-240.775 lead into the last two rotations. Tallying a 60.800 on high bar, the Cardinal owned a 303.250-298.875 lead heading into the final rotation, and it was too much for the Bears to overcome despite notching a 55.650 on high bar.
Following the meet, the Bears honored their five seniors - Bryan del Castillo, Daniel Geri, Kyle Bunthuwong, Michael del Junco and Eric Haeussler.
After the first rotation - Cal on floor and Stanford on pommel - the Bears held a 60.200-57.500 advantage. The Bears expanded on that by winning pommel horse, 59.375-57.500, as well as floor, 60.200-59.950, to establish over a two-point lead going into the third rotation. Stanford finally went ahead in the third rotation - 181.150 to Cal's 178.525 - thanks to its 63.700 on vault. The Cardinal led, 242.450-240.775, heading into the final two events. While the Bears took home the p-bars victory (58.100-57.700), Stanford won high bar, 60.800-55.650, to emerge victoriously at the end of the meet.
Though the Cardinal did not win floor, Stanford's Josh Dixon was first overall with a 15.700 and Tim Gentry was second at 15.150 with Glen Ishino, Bryan del Castillo and Daniel Culpepper all tying for third with 15.100. Pommel horse went to Bears with del Castillo tying Chris Turner for first, both scoring a 15.000. Kyle Bunthuwong was third (14.875) and Daniel Geri was fourth (14.850).
Jeffrey Langenstein rocketed his way to a vault win with his 16.300. Alex Buscaglia was second (16.050) and Tim Gentry was third (15.950). On rings, Gentry won the gold medal (15.700) while Steven Lacombe took silver with a 15.650. Glen Ishino won parallel bars with his 15.000, which was .05 ahead of second-place finisher Josh Dixon (14.950). Alex Buscaglia and the Cardinal absolutely dominated horizontal bar, taking the first six places.

Floor - Cal 60.200, Stanford 59.950:
After faltering ever so slightly on the opening pass on floor to start the Bears' evening, Donothan Bailey recovered for a 14.700. Eric Haeussler nailed his final tumbling pass to elicit crowd cheers and a 14.900 from the judges. The Bears had three student-athletes notch scores of 15.100 - Glen Ishino, Bryan del Castillo and Daniel Culpepper. Also competing on floor but not contributing a score was Dennis Mannhart, who tallied a 14.400.
Pommel Horse - Cal 59.375, Stanford 57.500:
Daniel Geri set a very high precedent with his lead-off routine on pommel horse, on which he scored a 14.850. Mannhart was up next and earned a 14.250. Kyle Bunthuwong was jubilant upon landing after his horse routine, and with just cause for he scored a 14.850. Bryan del Castillo topped his predecessors by scoring a 15.000 when he went fourth on pommel. To close out the Bears on pommel, Ishino tallied a 13.550 and Donothan Bailey scored a 14.650.
Rings - Cal 58.950, Stanford 61.300:
Jean Monteclaro led off the Cal brigade, scoring a 13.800, followed by Mannhart with a 14.600. Bunthuwong tallied a 14.400 and Bailey was right behind him, in performance order and score with a 14.300. Christian Monteclaro scored a 14.150. Steven Lacombe finished out the event for the Bears on a serious high note, scoring a team-high 15.650.
Vault - Cal 62.250, Stanford 63.700:
Mannhart went first on the runway, scoring a 14.300 after collapsing on the landing. Bailey went second and earned a 15.150. Jeffrey Langenstein drew big cheers with his twisting and turning with a 16.600 start value, scoring a 16.300. Jean Monteclaro scored a 15.050 and Steven Lacombe bested him by a smidgen with a 15.100. Christian Monteclaro ended Cal's line-up with a 15.700.
Parallel Bars - Cal 58.100, Stanford 57.700:
Daniel Geri started things off with a 13.100 and Bryan del Castillo followed that up with a 14.450. Also notching a 14.450 was Michael del Junco, who assumed Dennis Mannhart's spot in the line-up. Bailey scored a 14.200. Glen Ishino broke the Bears' scoring wide open with a 15.000. Kyle Bunthuwong closed p-bars up with a 13.500.
High Bar - Cal 55.650, Stanford 60.800:
Nic Blair saw the first action in the final rotation and scored a 13.700. Jacob Jizrawi was up next, tallying a 13.750. Eric Hauessler notched a 13.900 and Bailey scored a 13.400. After slipping off the bar in his first go around, Kyle Bunthwuong absolutely nailed the landing to score a 14.300.
