COLUMBUS, Ohio - With Donothan Bailey taking fourth in the all-around, the No. 3 California men's gymnastics team finished second at the NCAA pre-qualifying session on Thursday evening. No. 2 Stanford won the session and No. 6 Michigan finished third to fill the three spots at Friday's NCAA Team Championships.
With their collective 361.800, the Bears bested Michigan, host Ohio State and Iowa for the right to move onto Friday's final team meet.
Bailey scored 88.650 to place fourth in the all-around. Michigan's Sam Mikulak won with a 90.100.
The standout event for the Bears was no doubt vault, on which Cal took three of the top four spots. Steven Lacombe and Christian Monteclaro tied for second, each scoring 16.350, which was 0.500 out of first, which went to Alex Buscaglia of the Cardinal. Jean Monteclaro was fourth with a 16.250.
Ishino earned his highest finish of the night on pommel horse with a second-place score of 15.100. Bailey took fourth at 14.850. Geri tied for ninth with a 14.400.
Cal's highest finisher on floor were Bryan del Castillo and Daniel Culpeper, who tied OSU's Sean Regan for seventh, all scoring 15.200. Glen Ishino took 10th at 15.100. Eric Haeussler tied for 21st with three others, all of whom scored 14.400.
Kyle Bunthuwong paced the Bears on high bar, on which he took fifth overall with a 14.900. Jacob Jizrawi was 12th at 14.450. Bailey was in 19th at 14.100. Haeussler tied for 23rd (13.9000).
Parallel bars saw del Castillo tie for fourth with Alex Buscaglia, with both notching 15.3450. Daniel Geri owned eighth place at 15.150 with Bailey right behind him in sole possession of ninth at 15.100. Haeussler tied for 11th (14.900).
On rings, Steven Lacombe was the Bears' top finisher, taking 11th with a 15.00. Jeffrey Langenstein tying Regan for 12th (14.950). Bunthuwong was 15th, scoring a 14.850. Bailey tied Stanford's Ryan Lieberman for 16th at 14.800).
With their ticket punched to Friday's finals, the Bears will now vie for the national title. Things get underway at 4 p.m. PT. The top 10 gymnasts in each of the six team events Friday evening advance to Saturday's NCAA Championship individual event finals, which begin at 4 p.m. PT, where the top eight finishers on each of the six events will be awarded All-America status.
