Cal Falls at Stanford 9-5
April 25, 2011
Box Score
Freshman Michael Theofanopoulos gave California its offensive highlight with a three-run homer in the seventh inning, but the Golden Bears still fell to Bay Area rival Stanford, 9-5, Monday night (April 25) at Sunken Diamond. No. 20-ranked Cal dropped to 24-13, while the Cardinal improved to 20-13. After trailing 8-0 after six innings, the Bears were able to muster five runs in the last three innings.
The losing pitcher for Cal was senior right-hander Kevin Miller (5-3), who went 5.1 innings with 11 hits, seven earned runs, one walk and six strikeouts. Stanford reliever Brian Busick earned the win for the Cardinal (3.0 innings, three hits, three strikeouts).
Stanford scored the first two runs of the game in the bottom of the first inning on Stephen Piscotty's two-run single to left field off Miller. The Cardinal added another run in the third inning on an RBI single through the left side of the infield by Kenny Diekroeger, scoring Zach Jones, who had reached base on shortstop Marcus Semien's throwing error to start the inning.
Stanford added two more runs in the fourth inning on Jake Stewart's two-run single to left field and three runs in the sixth inning.
The Bears outscored the Cardinal in the last part of the game using their bench. Besides Theofanopoulos' towering shot over the right field fence for his first collegiate home run, sophomore Paul Toboni had a sacrifice fly in the eighth inning and freshman Derek Campbell had an RBI double in the ninth inning. Campbell finished the game 2-for-2.
The Bears will next host Oregon in a three-game Pac-10 series, beginning Friday, April 29 at 2:30 p.m. at Evans Diamond.
