SACRAMENTO, Calif. - Sophomore pitcher Jolene Henderson continues to give proof to the "Roll on you Bears" cheer for she is, in fact, on a roll. After pitching her No. 9/12 California softball team to a 3-2 upset of No. 4 Arizona State on Sunday, Henderson pitched a perfect game through six en route to a 4-0 victory over Sacramento State on Wednesday afternoon.
With the Bears up 4-0 in the bottom of the seventh and Henderson's perfect game at stake, Alyssa Nakken laid down a bunt to the left side of the plate for a hit. The Bear defense went to work and shut down the Hornets for the final three outs, with Nakken reaching as far as third.
"We played strongly today," Henderson said. "The defense was strong and we did what we needed to do to get the 'W'. The perfect game would have been cool, but the win was cooler."
Thanks to the win, the Bears improve to 23-6 while the Hornets fall to 8-15. After seven innings in the circle, Henderson is now 21-4 overall. Playing just miles away from her hometown of Elk Grove, Calif., Henderson struck out six.
Cal outhit CSUS, 9-1, thanks to two hits apiece from Jamia Reid, Jace Williams and Victoria Jones. Diane Ninemire toyed slightly with the line-up with Ashley Decker starting at second and Victoria Jones behind the plate.
Jace Williams started the scoring with a soft liner over third baseman Emily McCormick's head to plate Britt Vonk. Williams came home to score courtesy a hit into left field by Frani Echavarria, who took second and third on an error in left.
Cal took a 4-0 lead with no outs in the top of the second when Elia Reid homered to left, which also plated Victoria Jones, who had reached on a hard hit single to short.
To begin the top of the fifth, Vonk got plunked in the back and then moved to third when Williams had a stand-up double to center. Ashley Decker lined out to second to end the inning with Williams at second and Vonk at third.
The Bears return to action with three games at Washington in Seattle.
