Five Cal pitchers limited UC Davis to four hits and the No. 25-ranked Golden Bears received key RBI from juniors Chadd Krist and Marcus Semien on the way to an 8-3 victory versus the Aggies Wednesday afternoon (May 18) at Dobbins Stadium. Cal, which had trailed 2-0 after the first two innings, improved to 29-16 overall. UC Davis fell to 16-31.
The winning pitcher for the Bears was sophomore left-hander Justin Jones (7-4), who pitched 4.0 innings in relief with one hit, one walk and five strikeouts.
The Aggies scored the first two runs of the game off of Cal junior right-hander Dixon Anderson in the second inning on an RBI single by Ryan Allgrove, followed by a throwing error by Bear shortstop Semien that allowed Jason Andrade to score.
Semien was able to redeem himself in the top of the third inning with an RBI single to center field, scoring sophomore designated hitter Darrel Matthews, who had a one-out single to left field to give the Bears a baserunner.
Cal took a 3-2 lead in the top of the fifth inning when senior left fielder Austin Booker had a one-out double to left field. Semien followed with a walk and after the Aggies were able to get Tony Renda out, junior catcher Chadd Krist had a clutch two-out double over the left fielder's head to score Booker and Semien.
The Bears tacked on three more runs in the sixth inning off of Aggie reliever Scott Chew to take a 6-2 lead. Sophomore first baseman Devon Rodriguez led-off the inning with a single through the left side of the infield and ended up scoring on a balk, Matthews had an RBI single up the middle and Semien capped the scoring with an RBI triple to center field.
Cal added two more runs in the top of the ninth inning on a fielding error by UC Davis third baseman Andrade that allowed Semien to score, and an RBI single by Rodriguez, who finished the day with three hits. The Aggies scored a run in the bottom of the ninth on a throwing error by Krist on a steal for the final 8-3 margin.
Semien ended the day 3-for-4 with a triple and two RBI, while Krist and Matthews each collected two hits.
The Bears next travel to Los Angeles for a key Pac-10 series at UCLA, May 20-22, at Jackie Robinson Stadium.
Cal will conclude the regular season May 24 at Pacific and then host Bay Area rival Stanford for the last Pac-10 series of the year at Evans Diamond. Due to the Cardinal's schedule of finals, the Big Series will be a 2:30 p.m. start on Friday, May 27, and then a noon doubleheader on Saturday, May 28.
