LOUISVILLE, Ky. - With a two-run homer and a two-out error by Louisville that allowed two California runs to score in the bottom of the second, the No. 7-seeded Golden Bears earned themselves a 4-0 win over host Louisville on Saturday afternoon. With its second win at the Louisville Regional in hand, Cal moves onto Sunday's championship game.
Elia Reid got things started with the homer in the second. While Jace Williams did not get the RBI because it was an error, it was her hit that scored the other two runs.
Left-handed hurler Tori Collins started and last just over five innings, in which she gave up two earned runs off six hits and one walk while fanning five.
Jolene Henderson pitched the seven-inning win.
With Jordan at first after reaching on a fielder's choice, Elia Reid's hit ignored the arm-waving pleas of the Louisville third baseman to go foul and it went out of the park in fair territory for a two-run homer. The home run, Reid's eighth of the season, gave Cal a two-run lead in the bottom of the second.
Jace Williams hit what looked to be a well-played fly-ball catch in center field to end the bottom of the third, but center fielder Kristin Austin dropped the ball after she caught it. The error allowed Jamia Reid and Britt Vonk to score unearned runs, putting the Bears up 4-0 with two outs.
Ashley Decker reached when first baseman Alicja Wolny lost the ball when applying a tag in the baseline. Frani Echavarria golfed Cal's sixth hit of the game straight up the middle and a sacrifice from Victoria Jones moved them to third and second.
Cal advances to Sunday's championship game, which will begin at 11 a.m. PT on Sunday. The Bears' opponent depends on the outcome of the other two Saturday games. Illinois-Chicago takes on Jacksonville State and the winner of that game will play Louisville for the right to play the Bears on Sunday.
