LOS ANGELES, CALIF -
Junior right fielder Chad Bunting led off the fifth inning with a home run to get No. 25-ranked Cal within 2-1, but that was as close as the Golden Bears would get as they fell at No. 17 UCLA Saturday afternoon (May 21) at Jackie Robinson Stadium. Cal, which had shut out the Bruins, 4-0, Friday night, fell to 30-17 overall and 13-10 in the Pac-10. UCLA, bolstered by a complete game from junior right-hander Trevor Bauer (11-2), improved to 30-20 and 15-8 in league play.
The two teams will play the rubber match at 1 p.m. Sunday, May 22 at Jackie Robinson Stadium.
The Bruins scored the first two runs of the game off of Bear junior right-hander Dixon Anderson (4-3, 5.2 innings, six hits, two runs, one earned run, four walks, four strikeouts). In the bottom of the first inning UCLA's Jeff Gelalich reach on an error by Cal second baseman Tony Renda and later scored when Anderson forced the Bruins' Cody Keefer to hit into a double play.
UCLA pushed to a 2-0 lead with a run in the third inning when Dean Espy forced a one-out walk from Anderson, advanced to third on Keefer's double to right center field, and scored on Cody Regis' sacrifice fly to center field.
The Bears got back in the game when Bunting, who had been out with a sprained thumb from March 13 through May 7, hit his third home run of the year with a solo shot to left field off of Bauer. However, Cal was not able to muster any more runs after that point, finishing with five hits on the day. UCLA only had six hits off of Anderson and sophomore right-hander Logan Scott (2.1 innings, no hits, no runs, no walks, two strikeouts).
Besides Bunting's home run, junior shortstop Marcus Semien and sophomore first baseman Devon Rodriguez doubled for the Bears.
After the series with UCLA, Cal will conclude the regular season May 24 at Pacific and then host Bay Area rival Stanford for the last Pac-10 series of the year at Evans Diamond. Due to the Cardinal's schedule of finals, the Big Series will be a 2:30 p.m. start on Friday, May 27, and then a noon doubleheader on Saturday, May 28.
