SANTA CLARA, Calif. -
California sophomore left-hander Justin Jones threw a stellar 6.0 innings and junior right-fielder Chad Bunting and junior shortstop Marcus Semien each knocked three-run homers as the Golden Bears (36-21) shut out Dallas Baptist, 7-0, in the first game of the NCAA Santa Clara Super Regional Saturday (June 11) at Stephen Schott Stadium in Santa Clara.
Jones improved his record to 9-6 by throwing 6.0 innings with only one hit, one walk and three strikeouts before leaving the game after experiencing discomfort in his left bicep. Sophomore right-hander Logan Scott did an outstanding job in relief, earning his first collegiate save by pitching the final 3.0 innings, allowing just two hits with a strikeout.
Offensively, Cal got a huge boost in the second inning on Bunting's three-run homer off of Dallas Baptist starter Brandon Williamson (10-4, 7.2 innings, 10 hits, seven runs, one walk, four strikeouts). In the second inning, Williamson had given up back-to-back one-out singles to sophomore first baseman Devon Rodriguez and sophomore third baseman Mitch Delfino before Bunting's towering shot over the left field fence.
The Bears added another run in the sixth inning when Semien hit a triple down the right field line and scored on Rodriguez's sacrifice fly to center field. Semien struck again with a three-run homer in the eighth inning after sophomore second baseman Tony Renda had reached base on a strikeout/wild pitch and junior catcher Chadd Krist drew a walk off of Williamson.
Besides Semien's two hit day in which he hit a triple and homer, senior left fielder Austin Booker, Delfino and sophomore center fielder Darrel Matthews also recorded two hits apiece as Cal out-hit the Patriots, 11-3.
"I was really happy with our starting pitching, Justin (Jones) was fantastic," said Cal coach David Esquer. "He was in control the whole time he was in there. He experienced some tightness in his bicep...some discomfort (prior to the seventh inning)...so we didn't want to take any chances with that. The key with our team is to be able to play loose and in the moment. A big part of being able to relax was that three-run homer (by Chad Bunting) that let us take a little bit of a deep breath. We couldn't have asked for more from the home crowd. They came out and supported us. That was a big lift that was obviously in our favor."
The Bears and the Patriots will play the second game of the NCAA Santa Clara Super Regional at 7 p.m. Sunday, June 12 at Schott Stadium. If necessary, a third game will be played either at 1 p.m. or 4 p.m., on Monday, June 13.
