Second-ranked California men's crew began competition at the 2011 IRA Championships at Cooper River in Cherry Hill, N.J., on Thursday with three wins in the heats. All five boats advanced to the next round, as well.
The three Golden Bear victories came in the varsity 8+, the junior varsity 8+ and the Freshman 8+. Cal's varsity 8+ comes to the national regatta after winning the national title last season.
In the varsity 8+ race, the Bears topped second-place Wisconsin by two seconds, 5:28.77-5:30.70. Cal's time was also the best out of all the varsity 8+ heats. Top-ranked Washington won its heat at 5:32.25.
It was the Bears over the Badgers again in the junior varsity 8+ heat. Cal crossed the finish line at 5:39.17 to Wisconsin's second-place time of 5:42.82.
The biggest margin of victory for the Bears on Thursday was a four-second win over Cornell in the freshman 8+. Cal posted a time of 5:37.52 to Cornell's 5:41.43.
The IRA Championships continue tomorrow with the semifinals and will conclude on Saturday with the grand finals. The winner of the varsity 8+ grand final will be recognized as the overall team national champion.
