Three boats from the second-ranked California men's crew advanced to the grand finals of the IRA Championships Friday at Cooper River in Cherry Hill, N.J. The varsity 8+, junior varsity 8+ and freshman 8+ all made the grand finals. The winner of the varsity 8+ grand final is recognized as the team national champion.
"We have battled sickness throughout the week leading up to the IRAs," head coach Mike Teti said. "I am very pleased with the performances of our squad over the past two days. In particular I am impressed with the second varsity 8, who have gained a lot of speed since the PAC-10 championships. The level of competition is very high, and I look forward to tomorrows racing."
Cal topped Brown by two seconds in the semifinals of the varsity 8+, 5:29.05-5:31.86. The Bears will be joined in the grand final with Washington, Princeton, Brown, Harvard and Wisconsin.
The second semifinal heat victory for the Bears came in the freshman 8+, with Cal topping Princeton, 5:39.89-5:44.79. In the junior varsity 8+, Cal still advanced to the grand final despite taking second to Washington in the semifinals, 5:38.63-5:39.90.
The IRA Championships conclude tomorrow with the grand finals.
