BRIDGEVIEW, Ill. - Robby Gogatz made eight saves for No. 7 California in a 0-0 double overtime tie with Northwestern at Toyota Park. The Golden Bears' record stands at 1-0-1, while the Wildcats are 0-1-1, after the nonconference match, which featured temperatures in the high 90s.

"Both teams gave a valiant effort," Cal head coach Kevin Grimes said.

Northwestern outshot Cal, 15-7, with Gogatz making four saves in the first half. The sophomore goalkeeper wound up with his second shutout of the season and a 0.00 goals-against average through 200 minutes.

Junior forward Kyle Lunt and junior defender Steve Birnbaum notched Cal's two shots on goal, with Lunt forcing a save from Tyler Mitchell at 18:57. Miller also saved Birnbaum's header at 70:03.

Sophomore midfielder Alec Sundly had chance for Cal at 63:19, but his shot was blocked. At 105:30, in the second overtime, sophomore midfielder Kyle Marsh produced Cal's last shot, but a Wildcat also blocked that effort.

Cal played in 12 overtime games - including nine double OT affairs - in 2010. In fact, the 2010 Bears likewise played to a 0-0 double OT result in the Midwest in their second regular-season match - that time at Notre Dame.

The Bears return to action when they play at No. 4 Connecticut at 1:30 p.m. PT on Sunday, Sept. 4, in Storrs, Conn.
