LOS ANGELES -
In both teams' Pac-12 opener, California held No. 16/25 UCLA to a 0-0 tie through regulation, but the host Bruins prevailed, 1-0, on a golden goal by Andy Rose in the 91st minute on Friday night at Drake Stadium. The Golden Bears fell to 3-3-2 (0-1 in the Pac-12 Conference), while UCLA improved to 6-3-1 (1-0 Pac-12).
"The team played well tonight," Cal head coach Kevin Grimes said. "It was obviously a close game."
Redshirt freshman goalkeeper Kevin Peach, making his second straight start for the Bears, made four saves, as the Bruins outshot the Bears, 17-6. But Peach allowed the first goal of his career when Rose latched onto a cross at 90:59 to end the match.
Brian Rowe, Peach's UCLA counterpart, made two saves - one on a shot by junior forward John Fitzpatrick in the fourth minute and another on a shot by junior forward Michael Munoz in the 59th minute.
Cal continues Pac-12 play at San Diego State at noon on Sunday, Oct. 2.
