Final Stats

LOS ANGELES - Cal's women's volleyball team hit for a .299 hitting percentage but simply ran into a hot opponent Thursday night, as No. 5 UCLA swept the Golden Bears, 25-16, 25-22, 25-18 at the John Wooden Center.

The Bruins (21-5, 13-4 Pac-12) hit .537, the highest an opponent has registered against the Bears this season. UCLA All-America candidate Tabi Love registered 21 kills at a .606 clip.

Cal junior outside hitter Adrienne Gehan led the Bears (14-13, 8-9) with 11 kills and nine digs and sophomore outside hitter Christina Higgins added 10 kills.

"UCLA was pretty incredibly good tonight," Cal coach Rich Feller said. "They made very little mistakes. On most nights, if we are hitting .299, we are winning some matches."

Senior middle hitter Kat Brown added nine kills and the Bears at a .467 percentage. Cal fell behind quickly in the first set and the Bruins jumped out to a 17-9 advantage. A kill by Gehan and two UCLA hitting errors made it 17-12, but the Bears could not get any closer.

Cal was much sharper in the second set and established a 12-8 lead after consecutive kills by Gehan. The Bruins came back to take the lead but the Bears tied it back up at 18-18. Three straight points put UCLA in front once again and the Bruins went on to close out the set.

The third set was close in the early stages as UCLA took an 11-8 lead. But the Bruins then scored six points in a row and eventually built their advantage to 20-10. Cal cut it to 24-18 before UCLA closed out the match.

Senior middle hitter Shannon Hawari had eight kills and three blocks. It marked the seventh straight match Hawari has hit for at least a .500 percentage.

Cal returns to action Friday night for a match at No. 8 USC at 7 p.m.
