EUGENE, Ore. - Megan Takacs cut the Oregon lead to one in the 54th minute with her fifth goal of the game, but California would not score again in a 10-9 loss to the Ducks in an MPSF match on Sunday on Papé Field.

Cal's record is now 1-2 (1-1 in the MPSF). Oregon's record is 2-2 (1-0 MPSF).

"We knew we had to clean up some of the mental mistakes and careless errors we made with the ball against JMU, but unfortunately we didn't fix those mistakes," Cal head coach Ginger Miles said. "By the end of the game, it was a little bit too much to make up."

The Bears lost to No. 9 James Madison, 13-9, in its previous game on Feb. 23 in Berkeley.

Against Oregon, Cal got goals from four different players in the first half but still trailed, 6-4, at halftime. Takacs, a junior midfielder, scored the game's first goal at 4:48, and freshman Gaby Christman scored the first goal of her college career at 11:50 to tie the game at 2-2.

Junior midfielder Melissa Humphrey converted an eight-meter goal at 16:02 and senior midfielder Emily Abbood, off a Paige Gasparino assist, notched the last goal of the half at 27:19 to make the score 6-4.

In the second half, Cal outscored the Ducks, 4-2, to tie the game at 8-8, with Takacs' goal at 46:58 tying the score. But then Oregon scored twice, Takacs netted her fifth goal and neither team recorded a shot the remainder of the match, giving the Ducks the victory.

"Megan Takacs did a great job," Miles said. "At the end of the game, she was one who wanted the ball on her stick and was the go-to player down the stretch that we needed."

The Bears outshot the Ducks, 25-19, despite the loss. Sophomore goalkeeper Megan McGinnis made eight saves for Cal, while Caroline Federighi made 13 for Oregon.

"I think McG did a great job of rebounding after struggling a bit in the first half," Miles said of McGinnis. "She made some huge stops to keep us in it and did a great job of pulling rabbits out of her hat, so to speak."

Cal returns to action when it plays Detroit Mercy and San Diego State on, respectively, March 8 and 10 in San Diego.
