California outscored Boston University, 4-1, to trail, 14-13, late in the game, but the Golden Bears couldn't get off another shot and lost to the Terriers, 14-13, on a rainy Wednesday night at Witter Rugby Field. Junior attacker Megan Takacs led Cal with six goals and junior attacker Melissa Humphrey tallied four assists.
"We've been working on mental toughness all year long with our sports psychologist, Jeff Troesch, and we've been in these situations," Cal head coach Ginger Miles said. "This is the third time we've been in this situation, and mental toughness bit us again. We just made mental errors and mental lapses down the stretch and didn't execute."
BU's Danielle Etrasco led all scorers with seven points (5 goals, 2 assists).
After California sophomore Paige Gasparino scored the first goal 49 seconds into the game, the Terriers scored four of the next give goals - capped by Etrasco's strike at 7:45 into the first half - to take a 4-2 lead.
Cal then went on a 5-0 run with goals by five different Bears - Humphrey at 10:04, sophomore midfielder Hayley Olson (11:37), Takacs (15:01), junior attacker Alexa Rozelle (21:37) and senior midfielder Val Horn (23:46) - to claim a 7-4 advantage.
BU had the next run, scoring the next three goals to knot the score at 7-7 heading into halftime.
Etrasco scored her fourth goal of the day just 47 seconds into the second half to give the Terriers an 8-7 lead. But senior midfielder Emily Abbood and Takacs scored the next two goals to give Cal a 9-8 lead at 35:57.
That was the last time Cal led, as BU scored the next five goals to lead 13-9. Takacs scored three of the Bears' last four goals - Rozelle scored the other at 49:13 - with Takacs' last goal coming at 59:17, to cut the lead to one at 14-13. The Terriers won the ensuing draw control and held on for the 14-13 victory.
Sophomore goalkeeper Megan McGinnis made two saves for Cal, while Christina Sheridan made eight saves for the Terriers.
Cal next plays on March 21, when it hosts MPSF opponent Denver at 4 p.m. at Witter Rugby Field.
