Led by the stellar pitching of senior right-hander Matt Flemer and game-clinching home run by senior catcher Chadd Krist, the Cal baseball team won its first Pac-12 contest, defeating No. 14 Arizona State, 3-2, Saturday (March 24) at Packard Stadium in Tempe. The Golden Bears improved 13-8 overall and 1-4 in league play, while the Sun Devils fell to 14-8 and 2-3 in conference.
Flemer improved his record to 3-2 by throwing 6.1 innings with five hits, two runs, one walk and four strikeouts. He won a pitching duel over ASU starter Trevor Williams, who went 8.2 innings with four hits, one earned run, two walks and three strikeouts. Cal got an outstanding outing from senior right-handed reliever Joey Donofrio (1.1 inning, one hit, two strikeouts) another save from junior right-hander Logan Scott, who earned his fourth save of the season. Scott threw 1.1 innings with two hits and one walk, working out of a bases loaded jam in the ninth inning by getting Joey DeMichele to fly out to center field to end the game.
The Bears scored runs in the first two innings of the game with the help of Sun Devils' errors. In the first inning, sophomore first baseman Andrew Knapp had an RBI single through the left side of the infield, scoring Tony Renda who had reached base on a two-out error by ASU third baseman Drew Stankiewicz.
Cal scored a run in the second inning when freshman shortstop Chris Paul reached on another error by Stankiewicz, advanced to third base on senior right fielder Danny Oh's double, and scored on junior designated hitter Vince Bruno's sacrifice fly to left field.
The Bears upped their lead to 3-0 when Krist hit his first home run of the season, a solo shot to left field.
The Sun Devils battled back to get within one run on Stankiewicz's two run double in the bottom of the seventh inning, but Donofrio was able to get the next two ASU hitters to pop up to end the scoring threat.
The two teams will play the rubber match of the series on Sunday, March 25 at 12:30 p.m. at Packard Stadium. The Sun Devils had won the first game of the series, 5-1, Friday night.
