ROUND ROCK, TEXAS -
Cal baseball gave up runs in each of the first five innings, including four runs in the third inning, on the way to a 13-3 loss to No. 18 Texas (15-9) Friday night at Dell Diamond in Round Rock, Texas. The Golden Bears (14-10) struggled early, making two errors and giving up three runs in the first inning. Cal finally broke through with two runs in the fifth inning on junior left fielder Darrel Matthew's RBI double and freshman shortstop Chris Paul's sacrifice fly.
The Bears added a run in the sixth inning on junior second baseman Tony Renda's RBI single. The losing pitcher for Cal was junior left-hander Justin Jones, whose record dropped to 2-4 after throwing 2.2 innings with eight hits, six earned runs, two walks and a strikeout. Texas out-hit the Bears, 15-7.
Cal made two errors in the first inning on a ground ball hit to Paul and a throwing error by senior catcher Chadd Krist that got the Bears off to a bad start. Cal did not get a hit until Krist led off the fifth inning with an infield single to third base off of Longhorn starter Nathan Thornhill (3-2, 7.0 innings, five hits, two earned runs, no walks, five strikeouts). Sophomore first baseman Andrew Knapp followed with a single through the right side of the infield to advance Krist to second baseman. Then with one out, Mathews hit his double to left center field to score Krist and move Knapp to third base. Paul drove Knapp in with a sacrifice fly to left field.
The Bears got their third run in the sixth inning when junior designated hitter Vince Bruno singled and advanced to second base on a Texas throwing error. Bruno later scored on Renda's single to center field.
Cal went through four pitchers on the day with junior right-hander Ryan Wertenberger and senior right-hander Stephen Pistoresi each striking out three batters in 2.0 innings.
