BERKELEY - Junior designated hitter Vince Bruno had a key two-run single down the right field line in the eighth inning and senior right-hander Joey Donofrio was finally able to get a ground out to shortstop Chris Paul as Cal held on for a 7-6 win over Washington Friday (April 13) at Evans Diamond.

Bruno finished the day 3-for-5 and his two-run single in the eighth inning provided the Golden Bears a 7-3 cushion that was needed as the Huskies rallied for three runs in the top of the ninth before Donofrio (4-1, 2.1 innings, three hits, three runs, one earned run) was able to force pinch hitter Michael Camporeale to ground out to Paul. Cal snapped a four-game losing streak to improve to 18-14 and 3-7 in Pac-12 play. Washington dropped to 17-14 and 4-6 in league.

The Bears out-hit Washington, 15-13, led by Bruno's three hits and two hits apiece from sophomore right fielder Andrew Knapp, junior second baseman Tony Renda, junior left fielder Darrel Matthews and freshman shortstop Paul. Senior catcher Chadd Krist had a lead-off double in the second inning to give him his 57th career double, second on the Cal all-time career doubles list behind Jon Zuber's 61 doubles from 1989-92.

Renda had three RBI in the game with a two-run single in the third inning to give Cal a 2-1 lead. Sophomore third baseman Derek Campbell recorded an RBI ground out in the fourth inning to up the Bears' lead to 3-1, but Washington tied the contest, 3-3, with two runs in the top of the seventh inning on a fielding error by Cal center fielder Chad Bunting and an RBI single by Jayce Ray. Then in the bottom of the seventh Bruno recorded a one-out double and scored on Renda's double down the left field line. Later, junior Mitch Delfino had an infield RBI single to first base to give the Bears a 5-3 advantage.

Bruno's two-run single in the eighth ran the score to 7-3 before the Huskies notched three runs on three hits and an error by Renda in the ninth inning. Fortunately for Cal, Donofrio was able to get Camporeale to ground out with runners on first and second base to end the game.

The Bears will next host Washington in the second game of the three-game Pac-12 series Saturday, April 14 at 1 p.m. at Evans Diamond. KNEW 960 AM, part of the IMG Sports Network, will be broadcasting the Saturday and Sunday Washington-Cal games.
