Senior right-hander Matt Flemer threw his first career complete game, junior second baseman Tony Renda was 3-for-3 with a home run and Cal baseball took a 2-0 series lead over Washington with a 5-2 victory over the Huskies Saturday (April 14) at Evans Diamond. The Golden Bears - who also topped Washington, 7-6, on Friday - improved to 19-14 overall and 4-7 in the Pac-12 Conference. The Huskies fell to 17-15 and 4-7 in league.
Sophomore third baseman Derek Campbell and junior designated hitter Vince Bruno also had a big hits for Cal as Campbell had a two-run double followed by Bruno's RBI double in the Bears' three-run seventh inning. Junior left fielder Darrel Matthews added a 2-for-3 with two runs scored day for Cal.
Cal and UW will play the third game of the series Sunday, April 15 at 1 p.m. at Evans Diamond. The game will be broadcast by both KNEW 960 AM, part of the IMG Sports Network, and Cal's student radio, KALX 90.7 FM.
Flemer was impressive, throwing 9.0 innings with four hits, only one earned run, only one walk and six strikeouts to improve his record to 5-2 with a 2.15 ERA. Flemer's complete game was the first of his career and the first for the Bears this season. He has thrown 7.0 innings or more in eight of his nine outings this season.
Washington scored the game's first run in the third inning on Jayce Ray's RBI single up the middle, and then scored another run in the fourth inning on Andrew Ely's sacrifice fly to center field to take a 2-0 lead.
Cal came back with a run in the bottom of the fourth on Renda's lead-off homer to left field, his fourth home run of the season. The Bears tied the contest in the fifth inning on Bruno's RBI ground out to second base.
Cal was finally able to break the game open with three runs off of Husky relievers Zach Wright (2-1, 1.1 innings, three hits, three runs) and Austin Voth in the seventh inning when Matthews had a one-out single to left field, followed by freshman shortstop Chris Paul's infield single to shortstop. Matthews and Paul were then plated by Campbell's double, and Campbell scored on Bruno's double.
