The Cal baseball team missed an opportunity to sweep a Pac-12 series, losing to Washington, 5-3, Sunday (April 15) at Evans Diamond. The Golden Bears received a solid pitching effort from junior left-hander Justin Jones (8.2 innings, nine hits, three earned runs, one walk, four strikeouts), but the Huskies broke a 3-3 tie by scoring two runs in the top of the ninth inning for the win.
Michael Camporeale hit a hard shot to Cal third baseman Derek Campbell to start the top of the ninth inning. Campbell made a diving stop on Camporeale's hard hit ball, but threw wildly to first base. Jones then walked Erik Forgione to put runners on first and second base. After Jacob Lamb sacrificed runners to second and third base, Jones was able to strikeout Caleb Brown, but gave up a two-out single through the left side of the infield to Jayce Ray to score pinch runner Will Sparks. Joe Meggs followed with an infield single to give the Huskies an additional run.
Cal still won the series over Washington, winning Friday's contest 7-6 and Saturday's game, 5-2, behind senior right-hander Matt Flemer's complete game. The Bears are now 19-15 overall and 4-8 in the Pac-12. The Huskies go to 18-15 and 5-7 in conference play.
Junior designated hitter Vince Bruno led Cal with two hits, including a double. Senior catcher Chadd Krist's RBI ground out and Chad Bunting's single through the left side of the infield knocked in runs for the Bears in their two-run fourth inning. Campbell scored on UW reliever Tyler Kane's wild pitch in the fifth inning.
The winning pitcher for the Huskies was Joshua Fredendall (1-2), who threw the final two innings with no hits, no runs, one walk and two strikeouts.
Cal next hosts Santa Clara on Tuesday, April 17 at 2:30 p.m. at Evans Diamond. The Bears then return to Pac-12 action with a three-game series versus Utah, Friday April 20-22. KNEW 960 AM, part of the IMG Sports Network, will broadcast the April 21 and April 22 games, while Cal's student radio, KALX 90.7 FM, will broadcast all three games of the series. Game times are 2:30 p.m. Friday and 1 p.m. Saturday and Sunday.
