Senior right-hander Matt Flemer threw eight shutout innings, senior catcher Chadd Krist and sophomore right fielder Andrew Knapp homered and Cal pounded out 13 hits on the way to a 9-0 victory over Utah Saturday (April 21) at Evans Diamond. The Golden Bears have now won five of their last six games to improve to 22-15 overall and 6-8 in Pac-12 play. Utah falls to 10-27 and 5-12 in league. It was Cal's fourth shutout of the season.
Flemer (6-2, 1.95 ERA) threw his second straight stellar game, pitching 8.0 innings with five hits, no runs, one walk and eight strikeouts. In his last outing April 14 versus Washington, he threw a complete game with four hits, one earned run, one walk and six strikeouts.
Krist started the days scoring with a lead-off homer in the second inning off of Utah starter Brock Duke (2-2, 5.2 innings, eight hits, seven runs, three earned runs, three walks, two strikeouts). Cal added another run in the second inning on freshman shortstop Chris Paul's RBI single.
Junior first baseman Mitch Delfino pushed the Bears ahead 3-0 with an RBI double in the fifth inning before Cal exploded for four runs in the sixth inning.
In the sixth, Danny Oh scored on a fielding error by Ute second baseman Cory Hunt, Derek Campbell scored on a wild pitch and junior second baseman Tony Renda had a two-run single through the middle of the infield. The Bears added another run in the seventh inning on Paul's second RBI of the day. Knapp capped the day's scoring with a solo home run to right field in the eighth inning.
It was Knapp's third straight game with a home run. Both Delfino and Paul finished with three hits, and Renda was 2-for-5 with two RBI.
The Bears next play Utah in the third game of the three-game series Sunday, April 22 at 1 p.m. at Evans Diamond. KNEW 960 AM, part of the IMG Sports Network, will broadcast the April 22 Utah-Cal game, along with Cal's student radio, KALX 90.7 FM.
